Ernst Höfner (1 October 1929 – 24 November 2009) was Finance Minister of the German Democratic Republic. Werner Schmieder
Werner Schmieder (born 11 November 1926) is a former politician who served as the minister of finance in East Germany in the period 1980–1981. Biography Schmieder was born in Possendorf, today Bannewitz, on 11 November 1926. He received a degree in economy and in 1967 he also obtained his Ph.D. in road engineering. Between 1949 and 1955 he worked at Investbank in Dresden. In 1955 he became a member of the Socialist Unity Party. He was the head of the Investbank in Cottbus from 1955 to 1962. He served as the deputy minister of finance (1967–1974) and state secretary (1974–1980). Schmieder was appointed minister of finance in July 1980 succeeding Siegfried Böhm in the post. Uta Nickel
Uta Nickel (born 19 July 1941) is a German economist and one of the former finance ministers of East Germany. Early life and education Nickel was born in Leipzig on 19 July 1941. She studied economics. Career Nickel joined the ruling party of East Germany, Socialist Unity, in 1960. She served as the councillor of finance of Leipzig in the period between 1963 and 1976. She was state secretary for finances and prices from 1988 to 1989. She was appointed minister of finance and prices on 18 November 1989, replacing Ernst Höfner in the post. She was part of the reform-minded cabinet formed by Hans Modrow. She resigned from the office in January 1990 following the allegations that she was involved in illegal payments. Upon these accusations, she was investigated by the prosecutor general for financial breach of trust. Nickel denied any wrongdoing.
