Ernest Claes
Andreas Ernestus Josephus Claes (24 October 1885 in Zichem – 2 September 1968 in Elsene) was a Belgian author. He is best known for his regional novels, including ''De Witte'' ("Whitey"), which was the source material for the first Flemish sound film: ''De Witte ''De Witte'' or ''Dewitte'' is Dutch language, Dutch and Flemish language, Flemish for "The White" and may refer to: * The noble family "de Witte" (from Antwerpen) Surname * André de Witte (1944–2021), Belgian bishop in Brazil * Bruno de Witte ...'' (1920). In 1980 it was remade as '' De Witte van Sichem'' by Robbe De Hert. Zichem
Zichem is a village of the town of Scherpenheuvel-Zichem in the Belgian province of Flemish Brabant. Zichem was an independent municipality until the municipal redistribution of 1977. History Zichem belonged to Maria van Loon-Heinsberg, who was a descendant of the Counts of Loon. After her marriage in 1440 to Jan IV of Nassau, Zichem became part of the county of Nassau-Dillenburg. ( French, ) or ( Dutch, ) is one of the 19 municipalities of the Brussels-Capital Region, Belgium. ''De vulgaire geschiedenis van Charelke Dop'', ''(The vulgar history of Charelke Dop)'', is a novel written by Ernest Claes in 1923. Synopsis It is World War I. Charelke Dop lives in the Belgian municipality Diest. He pretends to be poor but is rather rich. After his wife Angelina dies he moves to Brussels. Charelke is a manipulative, lying, stingy, immoral but charming widower. He earns a lot of money by declaring people to the German soldiers although he is a smuggler, traitor and blackmailer. He convinces highly placed Belgians that he performed acts of valour (whilst it were only misdeeds) and thus receives medals of honour and an accompanying ceremony. Johanna Maria Stephanie Claes-Vetter (February 25, 1884 – October 9, 1974) was a Dutch-born novelist in Belgium who wrote in Dutch. She was born Johanna Maria Stephanie Vetter in Zutphen and married Flemish writer Ernest Claes. Vetter was an advocate for women's rights in Flanders. From 1909 to 1914, she was co-editor of the women's literary magazine ''De Lelie''. She published her first novel ''Eer de mail sluit'' (Before the mail closes) in 1915. In 1927, a collection of short stories ''Verholen krachten'' (Hidden forces) was published. ''Humo'' (stylized in all caps) is a popular Dutch-language Belgian weekly radio and television magazine. ''Whitey'', original title: ''De Witte van Sichem'', is a Belgian film by Robbe De Hert released in 1980. The film is an adaptation of Ernest Claes' novel ''De Witte''. It is the second adaptation of the book. The other film was released in 1934 as De Witte. The title ''Whitey'' refers to the nickname of the main character: Louis Verheyden, a naughty blond boy of eleven years old. Plot The film is set in and around Sichem in 1901. Robin François De Hert (20 September 1942 – 24 August 2020) was a Belgian film director. Next to feature films, De Hert also directed short films, series and documentaries, most of Flemish origin. De Hert won the André Cavens Award for Best Film in 2000, with his film '' Lijmen/Het Been''. He died on 24 August 2020 at the age of 77 due to complications of diabetes.
