Eljas Erkko
Juho Eljas Erkko (1 June 1895 in Helsinki – 20 February 1965 in Helsinki) was a Finnish politician and journalist. He was a foreign minister and negotiated with the Soviet Union before the Winter War started. Erkko's father was politician and journalist Eero Erkko and son journalist Aatos Erkko. Eljas Erkko graduated as Abitur in 1914, Vimpeli School of War in 1918 and Master of Laws in 1922. In 1918, he fought for the White Guards in the Finnish Civil War Battle of Ruovesi. He was elected as a Member of Parliament on 1 September 1933 from Uusimaa constituency. Erkko was a President's elector chosen by voters in the presidential election 1931, 1937, 1940 and 1943. Erkko was the Minister of Foreign Affairs between 1938 and 1939, as the Finns negotiated with the Soviet Union. The Soviets demanded exchange of areas with Finland. Eero Erkko
Eero Erkko (18 May 1860, Orimattila - 14 October 1927) was a Finnish journalist and politician. He served as minister of social affairs from 27 November 1918 to 17 April 1919, minister of transport and public works from 17 April to 15 August 1919 and Minister of Trade and Industry from 15 August 1919 to 15 March 1920. He was a member of the Diet of Finland from 1894 to 1900 and again from 1905 to 1906 and of the Parliament of Finland from 1907 to 1919, representing the Young Finnish Party until 1918 and the National Progressive Party from 1918 to 1919. Erkko founded '' Päivälehti'' in 1889. He also edited the paper from 1890 to 1899. He was also the editor of ''Helsingin Sanomat'' (from 1908 to 1918 and again from 1920 until his death in 1927). ''Päivälehti'' was a newspaper in Finland, which was then a Grand Duchy under the Czar of Russia. The paper was founded in 1889 as the organ of the Young Finnish Party and was published on six days a week. The founding company of the paper was Sanoma which also started its activities in the same year. The founder of the paper was the Finnish journalist Eero Erkko who also served as its editor-in-chief. Political censorship by the Russian authorities, prompted by the paper's strong advocacy of greater Finnish freedoms and even outright independence, forced ''Päivälehti'' to often temporarily suspend publication. In June 1904, a week after Governor-General Nikolai Ivanovich Bobrikov was assassinated by Eugen Schauman, ''Päivälehti'' published an editorial about how at the time of mid-summer, the light wins against the darkness after all.
