Enslow
Enslow is a Hamlet (place), hamlet on the banks of both the River Cherwell and the Oxford Canal in Bletchingdon Civil parishes in England, civil parish, Oxfordshire. The medieval main road linking London with Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, Chipping Norton and Worcester, England, Worcester crosses the Cherwell at Enslow. There was a bridge here by the time that John Leland (antiquary), John Leland toured England in 1538–43. John Ogilby's ''Britannia Atlas'' of 1675 records a timber bridge here that he called ''"Emley Bridg"''. In 1718 the road was made into a Toll road, turnpike and at some stage the timber bridge was replaced by one with pointed stone arches. In 1814 the stone bridge was widened on its downstream side. to almost double its former width. In contrast with the older upstream side of the bridge, the 1814 arches are semicircular. Bletchingdon
Bletchingdon (also known as Bletchington) is a village and civil parish north of Kidlington and southwest of Bicester in Oxfordshire, England. Bletchingdon parish includes the hamlet of Enslow just over west of the village. The 2011 Census recorded the parish's population as 910. Toponym The earliest known document to mention Bletchingdon is in the Domesday Book of 1086, which records it as ''Blecesdone''. A charter written about 1130 records it as ''Blechesdune''. The '' Feet of fines'' records it as ''Blechesdon'' in 1197. A document called the ''Placitorum abbreviato'' records it as ''Blechindon'' in 1279. It is derived from the Old English ''Blecces dūn'' meaning "Blecca's hill". In recent centuries "Bletchington" has been an alternative spelling. Bletchington Railway Station
Bletchington railway station is a disused station in Oxfordshire at Enslow, England, a hamlet west of the village of Bletchingdon. The station had a number of names during its period of operation: 'Woodstock', 'Woodstock Road', 'Kirtlington' and finally 'Bletchington'. History The Oxford and Rugby Railway planned a railway between those two points, which was authorised on 4 August 1845; construction began in 1846, but before any portion was open, it was absorbed by the Great Western Railway. The line opened as far as on 2 September 1850, and there were three intermediate stations, the southernmost being ''Woodstock Road''. Upon the opening of a different station named Woodstock Road in 1855, this station was renamed ''Kirtlington''; and following rebuilding it was renamed for a final time on 11 August 1890, becoming ''Bletchington''. Great Western Railway
The Great Western Railway (GWR) was a History of rail transport in Great Britain, British railway company that linked London with the southwest, west and West Midlands (region), West Midlands of England and most of Wales. The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) (also known as Anti-Scrape) is an amenity society founded by William Morris, Philip Webb, and others in 1877 to oppose the Victorian restoration, destructive 'restoration' of ancient buildings occurring in Victorian architecture, Victorian England. Oxford And Rugby Railway
The Oxford and Rugby Railway was promoted by the Great Western Railway as a means of connecting to the West Midlands and the north of England, by joining existing railways at Rugby. It was authorised in 1845, but the GWR soon decided to make its own line to Birmingham, and in 1846 it acquired the O&RR; work had not started on its construction. In the same year the GWR obtained an act of Parliament, the Birmingham and Oxford Junction Railway Act 1846, giving authorisation for its Birmingham line. The two railways were treated as a single project, to connect Birmingham and Oxford. In 1850 a single line was opened between Oxford and Banbury, and in 1852 the whole line to Birmingham was opened. Domesday Book ( ; the Middle English spelling of "Doomsday Book") is a manuscript record of the Great Survey of much of England and parts of Wales completed in 1086 at the behest of William the Conqueror.
