Enghave Plads
Enghave Plads is a central public square of the Vesterbro district in Copenhagen, Denmark. It is located where Istedgade reaches Enghavevej, which separates the square from Enghave Park. History Enghave Plads was established when the Vesterbro area was built over in the late 1880s. A playground was established on the site in the late 1880s at the initiative of architect and city council member Ferdinand Meldahl. Enghave Plads School opened on the square in 1892. Christ Church, completed in 1900, was the second church to be built in the rapidly growing Vesterbro neighbourhood. For many years the square played host to an annual fun fair. From its opening in 1902 Enghave Plads was the southern terminus of Line 3 of the Copenhagen Tramways, which operated between Melchiors Plads in Østerbro and the square by way of Nørrebro and Frederiksberg. Vesterbro, Copenhagen
Vesterbro is one of the 15 administrative, statistical, and city tax districts (''bydele'') comprising the municipality of Copenhagen, Denmark. It covers an area of 3.76 km², and has a population of 51,466 and a population density of 13,688 per km². Kongens Enghave ("king's meadow"), commonly known as Sydhavnen ("south harbour") or the postal district of 2450 Copenhagen SV (southwest) is a district in southern Copenhagen. While its core is a largely pre-WWII former working class district, it also contains an upscale residential area along the harbour having been developed after 2000, scattered industrial areas, large parks such as Valbyparken and Sydhavnstippen, allotment gardens and parts of Vestre Kirkegård, the city's largest cemetery. The area has historically been a working class quarter, dissected by major transport corridors and characterized by industry along the harbour-front. Valdemar Koch
Otto Valdemar Koch (20 October 1852 – 24 February 1902) was a Danish architect and local politician. He designed a number of churches in Copenhagen. Early life and education Valdemar Koch was born in the parish of Sønder Kirkeby on the island of Falster, Denmark. His parents were pastor Hans Peter Gyllembourg Koch (1807–1883) and his second wife Anna Oline F. Parelius (1823–1861). In 1871, he joined the drawing school of C. V. Nielsen. He was then admitted to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from which he graduated in 1879. The following year, he travelled to Germany and Italy, which he repeated in 1883, 1885 and 1886. Career Koch initially worked as a draughtsman for Ludvig Fenger and Hermann Baagøe Storck. He participated independently in the competition for the new Copenhagen City Hall which was held in early 1889. Ludvig Fenger
Ludvig Peter Fenger (7 July 1833 – 9 March 1905) was a Danish architect. He was a proponent of the Historicist style, and from 1886 to 1904 he held the title of City Architect in Copenhagen. Among his works are several churches, the Central Fire Station and Vestre Prison in Copenhagen. He also directed the renovations of Church of Holmen and Christian IV's Stock Exchange. Early life and education Ludvig Fenger was born on 7 July 1833 in the village of Slots Bjergby outside Slagelse as the son of the local pastor. After graduating from Slagelse Latin School he attended the Royal Danish Academy while also working for architects such as Michael Gottlieb Bindesbøll, Christian Hansen and Ferdinand Meldahl. He received the Academy's Large Gold Medal in 1866 and went on several journeys abroad from 1867 to 1869. Cirkeline Plads
Cirkeline (Eng: Circleen) is a Danish comic book character, created by Hanne Hastrup in 1957. The character is a little elf with spiky black hair, who wears a red dress with black dots and prefers walking barefoot. Between 1968 and 1971, the comic was adapted for a series of animated shorts, when Hanne Hastrup wrote the scripts and Jannik Hastrup animated and produced 18 short films for the Danish public TV station Danmarks Radio. The last of the short films, ''Flugten Fra Amerika'' (Escape from America) has an anti-American message that prevented it from being broadcast. No new Cirkeline films were released until 1998. The first Cirkeline book was published in 1969, and in 1998, she took the leap to the big cinema screen in the first of 3 feature films. An allotment (British English), or in North America, a community garden, is a plot of land made available for individual, non-commercial gardening or growing food plants, so forming a kitchen garden away from the residence of the user. Such plots are formed by subdividing a piece of land into a few or up to several hundred parcels that are assigned to individuals or families. Such parcels are cultivated individually, contrary to other community garden types where the entire area is tended collectively by a group of people. In countries that do not use the term "allotment (garden)", a "community garden" may refer to individual small garden plots as well as to a single, large piece of land gardened collectively by a group of people. The term " victory garden" is also still sometimes used, especially when a community garden dates back to the First or Second World War.
