Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant
The Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant generates nuclear power in Ukraine. The plant is operated by Energoatom. Two VVER-1000 reactors are operational, each generating 1000 MW (net) of electricity, with two AP1000 reactors under construction. Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant is connected to the Rzeszów–Khmelnytskyi powerline, one of three 750 kV lines running between Ukraine and the European Union. On two occasions in November 2023, explosions were heard near the Khmelnitsky Nuclear Power Plant and its two Soviet-era reactors, which was assumed to be the result of near-misses by Russian missile attacks on or near the facility. History Construction of the first reactor started under the Soviet Union in 1981 and the first unit was put in operation in late 1987. Construction of the second reactor started in 1983 with plans to finish it in 1991. In 1990, however, construction was stopped as part of a moratorium on new plant construction introduced due to public mistrust foll ...

South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant
The South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant (), also known as the Pivdennoukrainsk Nuclear Power Plant, is a nuclear power plant in Ukraine, near the city of Pivdennoukrainsk in Mykolaiv Oblast, about south of Kyiv. It is the second largest of the country's five nuclear power stations. It is part of the South Ukrainian Energy Complex, along with the Tashlyk Pumped-Storage Power Plant and Oleksandrivka, Oleksandrivka settlement hromada, Voznesensk Raion, Mykolaiv Oblast, Oleksandrivska hydroelectric power station. It has three VVER-1000 pressurized water reactors and a net generation capacity of 2,850 megawatts (MW). In 2013, following major upgrade work, unit 1 was given a 10-year license extension, which will take it beyond its original 30-year design lifetime. Similar extensions are planned for units 2 and 3, licensed until 2015 and 2019, respectively. The Vetrino–Isaccea–Yuzhnoukrainsk powerline runs from the plant to Isaccea, Romania, but is mostly dismantled or ruined. H ...

Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant
The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station (; ) in southeastern Ukraine is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe and among the 10 largest in the world. It has been under Russian control since 2022. It was built by the Soviet Union near the city of Enerhodar, on the southern shore of the Kakhovka Reservoir on the Dnieper river. From 1996 to 2022, it was operated by Energoatom, which operates Ukraine's other three nuclear power stations. The plant has six VVER-1000 pressurized light water nuclear reactors (PWR), each fueled with U ( LEU) and generating 950 MWe, for a total power output of 5,700 MWe. The first five were successively brought online between 1985 and 1989, and the sixth was added in 1995. In 2020, the plant generated nearly half of the country's electricity derived from nuclear power, and more than a fifth of total electricity generated in Ukraine. The Zaporizhzhia thermal power station is nearby. On 4 March 2022, days into the Russian invasion of Ukraine, ...

Rivne NPP
Rivne Nuclear Power Plant (also called Rovno) is a nuclear plant in Ukraine in Rivne Oblast, which operates the first VVER-440 reactors to be constructed in Ukraine. The Regulatory Committee of Ukraine, during a meeting in Varash, adopted a decision on extending the lifetime of Rivne power units 1 and 2 by 20 years. The power station has four reactors with a nameplate capacity of just over 2500 MWe. In 2018 unit 3, after modernization, received a life-extension license extending its operation by 20 years until 2037. History The plant dates back to 1971, when the design of the West Ukrainian NPP, which was later renamed Rivne NPP, began. Construction of the plant began in 1973. The first two power units with VVER-440 reactors were commissioned in 1980–1981, and the 3rd power unit, the millionth unit, was commissioned in 1986. Since 1991, it has been guarded by the 5th NPP Protection Battalion. Construction resumed in 1993 after the moratorium was lifted. A survey of U ...

Electricity In Ukraine
Electricity is an important part of energy in Ukraine. Most electricity generation is Nuclear power in Ukraine, nuclear, and the system is inflexible. The bulk of Energoatom output is sold to the government's "guaranteed buyer" to keep prices more stable for domestic customers. Until the 2010s all of Ukraine's nuclear fuel came from Russia, but now most does not. Some electricity infrastructure was destroyed in the Russo-Ukrainian War, but Wind power in Ukraine, wind farms, Solar power in Ukraine, solar power and Battery energy storage system, batteries are thought to be resilient because they are Distributed generation, distributed. As of 2024 about 2 GW can be imported from other European countries, but that is not enough to cover peak demand. Better air defence is needed, and many small gas-turbine generators are being installed to Dispatchable generation, generate flexibly to reduce the Power outage, blackouts being caused by Russian strikes against Ukrainian infrastructur ...

Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant
The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (ChNPP) is a nuclear power plant undergoing decommissioning. ChNPP is located near the abandoned city of Pripyat in northern Ukraine, northwest of the city of Chernobyl, from the Belarus–Ukraine border, and about north of Kyiv. The plant was cooled by an engineered pond, fed by the Pripyat River about northwest from its juncture with the Dnieper River. Originally named the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant of V. I. Lenin after the founding leader of the Soviet Union, the plant was commissioned in phases with the four reactors entering commercial operation between 1978 and 1984. In 1986, in what became known as the Chernobyl disaster, reactor No. 4 suffered a catastrophic explosion and meltdown; as a result of this, the power plant is now within a large restricted area known as the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. Both the zone and the power plant are administered by the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management. The three other reacto ...
