Emilija Spudaitė-Gvildienė
Emilija Spudaitė-Gvildienė (13 September 1887 – 2 July 1965) was a Lithuanian educator and politician. In 1920 she was one of five women elected to the Constituent Assembly, Lithuania's first female parliamentarians. She remained a member of parliament until 1927. Biography Spudaitė-Gvildienė was born in Topeliškės in 1887 into the family of a small trader. She was educated at Riga City School until 1902 and then Riga Krotova Gymnasium, graduating in 1908. The following year she moved to Lithuania and began teaching at a school in Žemaičių Kalvarija. During World War I she temporarily relocated to Moscow from 1915 to 1917, teaching in the Moscow Lithuanian School. After returning to Lithuania in 1918 she taught at gymnasiums in Šeduva and Pakruojis and founded women's associations in both towns. A member of the Lithuanian Christian Democratic Party, in 1920 she was elected to the Constituent Assembly from constituency V, Panevėžys. She was re-elected in 1922, 1923 ... Seimas
The Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania (), or simply the Seimas ( ; ), is the unicameralism, unicameral legislative body of the Lithuania, Republic of Lithuania. The Seimas constitutes the legislative branch of Government of Lithuania, government in Lithuania, enacting laws and amendments to the Constitution of Lithuania, Constitution, passing the budget, confirming the Prime Minister and the Government of Lithuania, Government and controlling their activities. Balbieriškis
Balbieriškis is a small town in Kaunas County in central Lithuania. It is situated on the left bank of the Neman River. As of 2011, it had a population of 966. The town was established by German lumberman Hanus, who received a plot of land in the wilderness of Suvalkija from Grand Duke Sigismund I the Old. Hanus cleared the forest and built an estate. The settlement grew around the estate and was awarded city rights in 1530. However, the privileges were revoked in 1776. Etymology The name of the town is derived from the common Lithuanian suffix ''-iškis'', which comes from the river Barbiera (the left tributary of the Nemunas). Therefore, the original form of the town's name was ''Barbieriškis'', which was used both in the spoken language and in official documents. This form changed to the current form ''Balbieriškis'', which can be attributed to the fact that the current form is more easily pronounced. Lithuanian Catholic Women's Society
The Lithuanian Catholic Women's Organization () was a Lithuanian women's organization. Founded in 1908, it was the largest women's organization in interwar Lithuania. It was disestablished after the Soviet occupation of Lithuania (1940), Soviet occupation of Lithuania in 1940. In 1907, the First Congress of Lithuanian Women took place in Kaunas. On the congress it was decided that a national women's organisation should be founded. However, due to the split between Catholic and liberal women, the plan could not be realised, and instead they founded separate women's organisations. 1926 Lithuanian Coup D'état
The 1926 Lithuanian coup d'état ( Lithuanian: ) was a military coup d'état in Lithuania that replaced the democratically elected government with a authoritarian regime led by Antanas Smetona. The coup took place on 17 December 1926 and was largely organized by the military; Smetona's role remains the subject of debate. The coup brought the Lithuanian Nationalist Union, the most conservative party at the time, to power. Previously it had been a fairly new and insignificant nationalistic party. By 1926, its membership reached about 2,000 and it had won only three seats in the parliamentary elections. The Lithuanian Christian Democratic Party, the largest party in the Seimas at the time, collaborated with the military and provided constitutional legitimacy to the coup, but accepted no major posts in the new government and withdrew in May 1927.
