Eliott Baronets
The Eliott Baronetcy, of Stobs in the County of Roxburgh, is a title in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia. It was created on 3 December 1666 for Gilbert Eliott. The second baronet was a member of the pre-union Parliament of Scotland. The third Baronet sat as Member of Parliament for Roxburghshire. The Eliott Baronets share a common early Elliot ancestry with the nearby Earls of Minto (Elliot). It is thought that the surname spelling differences were contrived to differentiate the branches. Earl of Minto, in the County of Roxburgh, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1813 for Gilbert Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, 1st Baron Minto. The current earl is Gilbert Timothy George Lariston Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, 7th Earl of Minto (born 1953). The family seat is Minto Park, near Hawick in the Scottish Borders. The original family seat, Minto Castle, was demolished some years ago after having been abandoned for some time. History The family descends from the politician and judge Gilbert Elliot, who served as a Lord of Session under the judicial title of Lord Minto. Baronets are a rank in the British aristocracy. The current Baronetage of the United Kingdom has replaced the earlier but existing Baronetages of England, Nova Scotia, Ireland, and Great Britain. Baronetage of England (1611–1705) King James I created the hereditary Order of Baronets in England on 22 May 1611, for the settlement of Ireland. He offered the dignity to 200 gentlemen of good birth, with a clear estate of £1,000 a year, on condition that each one should pay a sum equivalent to three years' pay to 30 soldiers at 8d per day per man (total – £1,095) into the King's Exchequer. The Baronetage of England comprises all baronetcies created in the Kingdom of England before the Act of Union in 1707. Sir George Elliot, 1st Baronet
Sir George Elliot, 1st Baronet, JP (18 March 1814 – 23 December 1893) was a mining engineer and self-made businessman from Gateshead in the North-East of England. A colliery labourer who went on to own several coal mines, he later bought a wire rope manufacturing company which manufactured the first Transatlantic telegraph cable. He was also a Conservative Party Member of Parliament (MP). Early life George Elliot - often known in the Durham coalfield as Bonnie Geordie - was born in Gateshead, County Durham, on 18 March 1814, the eldest son of Ralph Elliot, a coal miner and Elizabeth, daughter of Henry Braithwaite, of Newcastle upon Tyne. Mining career At the age of 9, living in Shiney Row, he was a trapper boy at Whitefield Pit at Penshaw where underground he would open the doors when the miners came along with the tubs. Sir George William Elliot, 2nd Baronet (13 May 1844 – 15 November 1895) was an English colliery owner and Conservative politician who sat in the House of Commons in two periods between 1874 and 1895. Elliot was born at Houghton-le-Spring, the son of Sir George Elliot, 1st Baronet and his wife Margaret Green, daughter of George Green. His father had been MP for North Durham. Elliot was educated at Edinburgh and at Trinity College, Cambridge. He was an athletics blue in 1865 and 1866. He was the owner of a colliery. At the 1874 general election Elliot was elected Member of Parliament for Northallerton. He held the seat until 1885. In 1886, he was elected MP for Richmond and held the seat until 1895.
