Elli Tompuri
Elin Hulda Maria Tompuri, known as Elli (20 January 1880, Vehkalahti – 4 February 1962, Helsinki) was a Finnish actress, director, dancer and author. Biography Her parents, Jooseppi and Anna Maria were farmers. From 1898, she was a student at the Läroverket för gossar och flickor in Helsinki. In 1900, after a brief period at the University of Helsinki, she became an acting trainee, under the direction of Kaarlo Bergbom, at what is now the Finnish National Theatre. She was also engaged at the Swedish Theatre from 1903 to 1904, and was a director at the Tampere Theatre from 1905 to 1906. Her breakthrough came at the National Theatre in 1905, when she played the title role in ''Salome (play), Salome'' by Oscar Wilde. Her other notable roles were in ''Anna-Liisa'', by Minna Canth, and as Nora in ''A Doll's House'', by Henrik Ibsen. From 1908 to 1910, she appeared in Berlin, at the Lessing Theatre. ''Bertel'' Johan Sebastian, Baron Gripenberg, born 19 September 1878 in Saint Petersburg, died 6 May 1947, was a Finland-Swedish poet. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature fourteen times. Career His early poetry was inspired by fin de siècle eroticism, which was followed by an interest in ethics in the poetry published between 1908 and 1917. After that came a more militaristic and political period, in collections such as ''Under fanan'' (1918), ''Efter striden'' (1925) and ''Den stora tiden'' (1928). In a fourth and last period Gripenberg's poetry became more introspective. Gripenberg's 1925 poetry collection ''Den hemliga glöden'', published under the pseudonym Åke Erikson, is a parody of modernist poetry. He also translated English and Finnish works into Swedish. Eino Leino
Eino Leino (born Armas Einar Leopold Lönnbohm; 6 July 1878 – 10 January 1926) was a Finnish poet and journalist who is considered one of the pioneers of Finnish poetry and a national poet of Finland. His poems combine modern and Finnish folk elements. Much of his work is in the style of the ''Kalevala'' and folk songs in general. Nature, love, and despair are frequent themes in Leino's work. He is beloved and widely read in Finland today. Leino's birthday on 6 July was named Eino Leino Day (''Eino Leinon päivä'') as well as day of Finnish poetry and summer in 1992, and it is an established Finnish flag day.
