Ellen Burka
Ellen Burka ( Danby; August 11, 1921 – September 12, 2016) was a Canadian-Dutch figure skater and coach. She became a member of the Order of Canada in 1978 and was inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 1996. Personal life Ellen Danby was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, to Jewish parents who met in England. She learned German and English at home and Dutch and French in school. In the spring of 1943, she and her family were sent to Westerbork transit camp. Ellen had herself registered at Westerbork as the 'Dutch National Figure Skating Champion', at that time such a championship did not exist, the first official one was held in 1951. Westerbork's commander, , was very interested in figure skating and ordered that Ellen's skates and apparel be sent to the camp. There she was allowed to practice on the frozen pond. Skate Canada (Canadian French: ''Patinage Canada'', lit. "Skating Canada") is the national governing body for figure skating in Canada, recognized by the International Skating Union and the Canadian Olympic Committee. It organizes the annual Canadian Figure Skating Championships, the fall Skate Canada International competition, other national and international skating competitions in Canada, and the Skate Canada Hall of Fame. ''The Jewish Tribune'' was a privately owned community-based Canadian weekly Jewish newspaper founded by and closely associated with B'nai Brith Canada. It was founded in 1964 as ''The Covenant'', B'nai Brith's in-house newsletter and was later relaunched in the mid-1990s as an external publication at which point it adopted the name ''Jewish Tribune''. The ''Tribune'' was initially a fortnightly newspaper but became a weekly after several years. At its peak it had a circulation of over 100,000. The Granite Club
The Granite Club (founded as the Toronto Granite Curling Club) is a private social and athletic club in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Founded in 1875, it has a long history of sports competition. It is located at 2350 Bayview Avenue, north of midtown Toronto. History The Granite Club was founded in 1875 on St. Mary's Street in downtown Toronto. It was initially a curling club. It provided a curling rink and a skating rink as facilities. After only five years on St. Mary's Street, expansion was needed in order to improve existing facilities and to accommodate the growing membership. The Toronto Jewish Film Festival (TJFF) is an annual film festival held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is described as the largest Jewish film festival in the world.
