Electrelane
Electrelane is an English indie rock band, formed in Brighton in 1998 by Verity Susman and Emma Gaze. The band consists of Susman, Gaze, Mia Clarke, and Ros Murray. Their music draws from a wide range of influences including Neu!, Stereolab, Sonic Youth, and the Velvet Underground. When playing live, the band has a reputation for a focused show that minimizes audience interaction and rarely included more than one encore. Although the band has strong feminist and political views in their personal lives, they generally prefer to not communicate that directly to their fans or through their music; one exception is their inclusion of the protest song "The Partisan," - a Leonard Cohen cover - which they began playing while on tour in the United States during the months preceding the 2004 Presidential election. Rock It To The Moon
''Rock It to the Moon'' is the debut album by English rock group Electrelane. It was released on compact disc in the UK in 2001 by Let's Rock!, and issued by Mr. Lady Records in the US in 2002. Too Pure, the record label Electrelane signed with for their follow up album, '' The Power Out'' (2004), reissued ''Rock It to the Moon'' in 2005. The album was mostly instrumental. Verity Susman explained, "Way way back, when we first started, we always had a lot of singing. But it never worked that well. When we did instrumental it was always more interesting. More completely we felt like we were doing something good, while the songs with the singing ended up quite bog-standard, boring, not very interesting." Mia Clarke
Mia Lauren Clarke (born 20 March 1983) is an English guitarist from the alternative rock band Electrelane and an entrepreneur. She was born in Brighton, England and following a short period living in the Czech Republic moved to Chicago, United States in 2008 She formed a new band, Follows, in 2008 in Chicago with members of Russian Circles, Bloodiest, and Atombombpocketknife. Clarke has collaborated with Canadian hip hop artist Buck 65, contributing guitar to his Dirtbike 3/3 project. In April 2008, Clarke flew to Amsterdam to record a guitar improvisation with Andy Moor of The Ex. Their collaboration "Guitargument" was released digitally by File Thirteen Records on 17 February 2009 and as a CD edition by hellosQuare recordings in late 2010. Verity Susman
Verity Susman is an English songwriter, composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist. She is best known as a founding member and the frontwoman of the English indie rock band Electrelane. Music career Following classical piano, clarinet and saxophone lessons as a child and teenager, Susman formed the band Electrelane with drummer Emma Gaze soon after leaving school. The band released four albums, an EP, multiple singles and a Singles, B-Sides & Live compilation album between 2000 and 2007. Verity was lead singer and played keyboards, guitar and saxophone in the band. As they evolved from the post-rock sound of their mostly instrumental first album Rock It to the Moon, Verity Susman grew bolder in her role as the arranger and main songwriting force in the band. The Partisan
"The Partisan" is an anti-fascist anthem about the French Resistance in World War II. The song was composed in 1943 by Russian-born Anna Marly (1917–2006), with lyrics by French Resistance leader Emmanuel d'Astier de La Vigerie (1900–1969), and originally titled "La Complainte du partisan" (English: "The lament of the partisan"). Marly performed it and other songs on the BBC's French service, through which she and her songs were an inspiration to the Resistance. Too Pure
Too Pure Records was a London-based independent record label formed in 1990 by Richard Roberts and Paul Cox. The label gained prominence after the release of PJ Harvey's debut studio album ''Dry (album), Dry'' in 1992, and subsequently found further success in the late 1990s and early 2000s with albums by indie rock artists such as Mclusky and Electrelane. The label closed in 2008.
