El Dorado ( ) is a city in and the county seat of Butler County, Kansas, Butler County, Kansas, United States. It is situated along the Walnut River in the central part of Butler County and located in south-central Kansas. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, the population of the city was 12,870. It is home to Butler Community College. History El Dorado was laid out and platted in 1868. The name is of Spanish origin meaning "golden land". El Dorado was incorporated in 1870. In 1877, the Florence, El Dorado, and Walnut Valley Railroad Company built a branch line from Florence, Kansas, Florence to El Dorado; in 1881 it was extended to Douglass, Kansas, Douglass, and later to Arkansas City, Kansas, Arkansas City. The line was leased and operated by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. The line from Florence to El Dorado was abandoned in 1942. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway , often referred to as the Santa Fe or AT&SF, was one of the largest Class 1 railroads in the United States between 1859 and 1996. The Santa Fe was a pioneer in intermodal freight transport; at various times, it operated an airline, the short-lived Santa Fe Skyway, and the Santa Fe Railroad tugboats. Butler Community College (BCC) is a public community college in El Dorado, Kansas. History In 1927, El Dorado Junior College was founded. The college name has evolved over the years: Butler County Junior College, Butler County Community Junior College, Butler County Community College (BCCC), then finally to its current name of Butler Community College. The college briefly came into the national spotlight in the late 2000s when one of its students was murdered. Jackie Vietti was school president from 1995 until her retirement in December 2012.
