''El Clásico Paisa'' is the name for the rivalry between the teams of Atlético Nacional and Independiente Medellín. They share Estadio Atanasio Girardot, with a capacity of over 40,000. The two teams are among the most successful teams in Categoría Primera A, with Atlético Nacional the most successful in Colombia in terms of total trophies won, compared to Independiente Medellín, who instead are characterized by their loyal fanbase and their involvement in numerous league finals since the turn of the 21st century. The match started to gain more importance in the early 2000s, when Independiente Medellín ended their 40+ year title drought with their title in the 2002 Finalización tournament, and with ''El Poderoso'' defeating Nacional in the 2004 Apertura finals. Millonarios Fútbol Club, known simply as Millonarios, is a Colombian professional football club based in Bogotá, that competes in the Categoría Primera A, top flight of football in Colombia. The Copa Merconorte () was an international football competition organized by CONMEBOL from 1998 to 2001 by clubs from Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela and starting in 2000 clubs from the CONCACAF confederation were invited including Costa Rica, Mexico, and the United States. The competition ran alongside the Copa Mercosur—based on the actual Mercosur economic pact between Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. Teams did not directly qualify for this competition.
