Eigenji, Shiga
was a List of towns in Japan, town located in Kanzaki District, Shiga, Kanzaki District, Shiga Prefecture, Japan, at the western foot of Suzuka Mountains. As of 2003, the town had an estimated population of 6,194 and a population density, density of 34.17 persons per km2. The total area was 181.27 km2. On February 11, 2005, Eigenji, along with the city of Yōkaichi, Shiga, Yōkaichi, the town of Gokashō, Shiga, Gokashō (also from Kanzaki District, Shiga, Kanzaki District), and the towns of Aitō, Shiga, Aitō and Kotō, Shiga, Kotō (both from Echi District, Shiga, Echi District), was merged to create the city of Higashiōmi, Shiga, Higashiōmi. The town was named after a famous temple Eigen-ji and it is a key spot for viewing the Acer palmatum, momiji leaves turn red in the autumn. Eigen-ji (Rinzai Temple)
is a Buddhist temple in the Eigenji-Takano neighborhood of the city of Higashiōmi, Shiga Prefecture, Japan. It is the head temple of one of the 14 autonomous branches of the Rinzai school of Japanese Zen History Eigen-ji was founded in 1361 by the famous poet and roshi Jakushitsu Genkō under the sponsorship of the ''shugo'' of Ōmi Province, Sasaki Ujinori. At its peak, the temple had over 2000 priests and 56 chapels on the mountainside. During the Onin War, many priests from the Kyoto Gozan temple sought sanctuary at Eigen-ji; however, the temple burned down in 1492 and again in 1563 and fell into decline afterwards. According to a tradition in Inabe city in Mie Prefecture, a priest from Eigen-ji escaped over the Suzuka Mountains into Ise Province bearing the temple's treasures when the temple was destroyed by Takigawa Kazumasa on orders of Oda Nobunaga in 1570; however, there are no records of such an event at Eigen-ji itself. was a town located in Kanzaki District, Shiga Prefecture, Japan. Population As of 2003, the town had an estimated population of 11,984 and a density of 736.12 persons per km2. The total area was 16.28 km2.
