Edward Craggs-Eliot, 1st Baron Eliot
Edward Craggs-Eliot, 1st Baron Eliot ( London, 8 July 1727 – 17 February 1804, Port Eliot, Cornwall) was an English official and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1748 to 1784, when he was raised to the peerage as Baron Eliot. Life and career He was born to Richard Eliot (c.1694 – 19 November 1748) and Harriot Craggs (c.1704 – January 1769), the illegitimate daughter of the Privy Counsellor and Secretary of State, James Craggs (9 April 1686 – 2 March 1721) and the noted actress, Hester Santlow. His sister Anne, who married Captain Hugh Bonfoy, was a noted beauty who was painted twice by Sir Joshua Reynolds. Another sister, Elizabeth, married Charles Cocks, 1st Baron Somers. In 1742, he matriculated at St Mary Hall, Oxford but did not graduate. During 1747–1748, he travelled in Continental Europe, principally the Dutch Republic, Germany and Switzerland. Edward James Eliot
Edward James Eliot (24 August 1758 – 20 September 1797) was an English Member of Parliament. Life Eliot was born in Cornwall, the son of Catherine (''c''.1735–1804), daughter and heir of Edward Elliston of Gestingthorpe, Essex, an East India Company captain, and Edward Craggs-Eliot (1727–1804), politician, created Baron Eliot in 1784. He went to Pembroke College, Cambridge in 1775, becoming friends with the future Prime Minister, William Pitt the Younger, and graduated with an MA in 1780. He was elected Member of Parliament for St Germans, Cornwall from 1780 and for Liskeard from 1784. He soon became a Treasury minister from 1782, and was a member of the government of the Younger Pitt from 1783, being appointed King's Remembrancer in the Exchequer of pleas in 1785. Edward Eliot, 3rd Earl Of St Germans
Edward Granville Eliot, 3rd Earl of St Germans (29 August 1798 – 7 October 1877; styled Lord Elliot from 1823 to 1845) was a British politician and diplomat. Background and education St Germans was born in Plymouth, Devon, the son of William Eliot, 2nd Earl of St Germans and his first wife, Lady Georgina (13 April 1769 – 4 March 1806), daughter of Granville Leveson-Gower, 1st Marquess of Stafford. He was educated at Westminster School from 1809 to 1811, and matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford on 13 December 1815. Political career St Germans became the Secretary of Legation at Madrid on 21 November 1823. He became Member of Parliament for Liskeard the following year. Beginning his career as a Tory, he remained loyal to Robert Peel, and served as a Junior Lord of the Treasury from 1827 until 1830. Edward John Eliot
Captain Edward John Eliot (20 September 1782 Shenstone, Staffordshire – 6 November 1863 Peckham, Surrey ) was an English soldier. Eliot was the son of Francis Perceval Eliot and his wife Anne née Breynton (daughter of Dr John Breynton). He was born into a military family - the son of a colonel, the grandson and great grandson of Generals, but he himself never rose above the rank of captain. His letters and papers form an important record of military life for this period. He enrolled at the age of 15 into his father's Staffordshire Militia as an Ensign (1797), and a Lieutenant (1799). In 1799, he transferred as Ensign of the 62nd (Wiltshire) Regiment of Foot. His unit sailed from Ireland in May 1800 to the Île-d'Houat, in Quiberon Bay, where 40 years earlier the Battle of Quiberon Bay had been fought. St Germans (UK Parliament Constituency)
St Germans was a rotten borough in Cornwall which returned two Members of Parliament to the House of Commons in the English and later British Parliament from 1562 to 1832, when it was abolished by the Great Reform Act. History The borough consisted of part of St Germans parish in South-East Cornwall, a coastal town too small to have a mayor and corporation, where the chief economic activity was fishing. Like most of the Cornish boroughs enfranchised or re-enfranchised during the Tudor period, it was a rotten borough from the start. The right to vote rested in theory with all (adult male) householders, but in practice only a handful (who called themselves freemen) exercised the right; there were only seven voters in 1831. Edward Eliot (born 1618)
Edward Eliot (1618 – c. 1710) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1660 and 1679. Eliot was the son of Sir John Eliot of Port Eliot St Germans and his wife Radigund Gurdie, daughter of Richard Gurdie of Trebursey. He was educated at Blundell's School in Tiverton from 1629. On the death of his father in 1632 he inherited the Trebursey estate. He was commissioner for assessment in Cornwall from 1644 to 1652 and in 1657. In 1659 he was among a group of Cornish leaders who issued a proclamation at Truro calling for a free parliament. In 1660, Eliot was elected Member of Parliament for Launceston in the Convention Parliament in a double return and was unseated on 29 June. Edward Carlyon Eliot, (18 April 1870 – 1 January 1940) was a British Colonial Service administrator. Personal Eliot was the son of Edward Eliot and Elizabeth Harriette (née Watling), and described as a neat, slim man of medium height with very black hair. His brother was Charles Eliot, who was Commissioner for British East Africa and Ambassador to Japan. Edward married, first, Clara Frances Paterson on 6 June 1899; and, second, Alice Marion Shand, granddaughter of Henry Alfred Alford Nicholls, in 1927, with whom he had a son, David, in 1935. Edward Francis Whately Eliot (15 April 1864 – 29 June 1943) was an Anglican Archdeacon in the Mediterranean. Eliot was educated at Haileybury and Trinity College, Cambridge; and ordained in 1886. After curacies in Tufnell Park and Bournemouth he held incumbencies in Southampton, Eastbourne and Haywards Heath. He was Chaplain of St Michael, Beaulieu-sur-Mer from 1921 to 1934.
