Eastport, Michigan
Eastport is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) located in Antrim County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population of the CDP was 206 at the 2020 census. It is located in Torch Lake Township. History The area was settled by lumberman Murdock Andress in 1863, and a hotel was built in 1869. A post office named Wilson opened on March 29, 1872. It was renamed Eastport on September 8, 1873. The community became a popular shipping area along the east coast Grand Traverse Bay and the northern shores of Torch Lake. The name Eastport was derived from its eastern location along the bay, which was directly across the bay from Northport. The community of Eastport was listed as a newly-organized census-designated place for the 2010 census, meaning it now has officially defined boundaries and population statistics for the first time. The United States census of 2010 was the twenty-third United States national census. National Census Day, the reference day used for the census, was April 1, 2010. The census was taken via mail-in citizen self-reporting, with enumerators serving to spot-check randomly selected neighborhoods and communities. Northport, Michigan
Northport is a village in Leelanau Township within Leelanau County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 526 according to the 2010 U.S. census. When Leelanau County was formed in 1863, Northport served as the first county seat from 1863 to 1883. History In 1848 Michigan suffered from a smallpox epidemic that affected the entire community of people. Chief Peter Waukazoo and Reverend George Smith moved the community as well as the Holland-area Ottawa Mission up to the Leelanau Peninsula on boats or canoes. When the settlers had reached their destination they called it Waukazooville. Deacon Joseph Dame arrived at Waukazooville in 1854 and decided to change the name to Northport at this time. Torch Lake is a lake in the Northern Lower Peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan. Grand Traverse Bay
Grand Traverse Bay is a deep bay of Lake Michigan formed by the Leelanau Peninsula in the northwestern Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The bay is long, wide, and up to deep in spots. It is further divided into two east and west arms by the Old Mission Peninsula. The entire bay is conterminous with the Grand Traverse Bay Bottomland Preserve. It should not be confused with Grand Traverse Bay of Lake Superior, located on the Keweenaw Peninsula.
