Service area According to the FY 2014 Institute of Museum and Library Services Data Catalog, the Library System has a service area population of 45,768 with 1 central library and 3 branch libraries. History The Eastern Shore Public Library was started on January 16, 1957 in Accomac's Community Hall. The library used a bookmobile with stops in 50 locations. The library became a regional library system on July 1, 1958. The Main Library, the primary library, located in Accomac. The Northhampton Free Library is a branch library. Cape Charles is a town / municipal corporation in Northampton County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,009 as of the 2010 Census. History Cape Charles, located close to the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, on Virginia's Eastern Shore, was founded in 1884 as a planned community by railroad and ferry interests. In 1883, William Lawrence Scott became president of the New York, Philadelphia and Norfolk Railroad Company (NYP&N), and purchased three plantations comprising approximately 2,509 acres from the heirs of former Virginia Governor Littleton Waller Tazewell. Of this land, 40 acres were ceded to the NYP&N, and 136 acres went to create the Town of Cape Charles (technically known as the "Municipal Corporation of Cape Charles"). Chincoteague Island Library
The Chincoteague Island Library is a historic U.S. building located at 4077 Main Street, Chincoteague, Virginia. Built in the 1890s, this one-story building is the oldest commercial wood frame structure in Chincoteague. It was initially a drug store, but was later used as a barber shop beginning in 1908. On July 4, 1995, the building opened as a public library. In 2010, a new wing was added to the library to accommodate its collection and offer more space for patrons to use. Originally 600 square feet, the library has tripled in size with the addition of the new wing. Chincoteague, Virginia
Chincoteague ( or ) is a town in Accomack County, Virginia, U.S. The town includes the whole of Chincoteague Island and an area of adjacent water. The population was 2,941 at the 2010 census. The town is known for the Chincoteague Ponies, although these are not actually on the island of Chincoteague but on nearby Assateague Island. Accomack County is a United States county located in the eastern edge of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Nassawadox is a town in Northampton County, Virginia, United States. Per the 2020 census, the population was 533. The town, with an area of , is located on U.S. Route 13 on Virginia's Eastern Shore, approximately five miles south of Exmore and north of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.
