''East End, West End'' is a 1958 British sitcom which was first broadcast in a single series of six episodes by ITV. It was produced by Associated-Rediffusion Television as vehicle for Sid James, who had made his name as the sidekick in ''Hancock's Half Hour''. It was only with his starring roles in the Carry On films that he was able to move out of Hancock's shadow. James was poached from the BBC to make the show. A second series of thirteen episodes was announced but never produced.Goodwin p.121-22 The scripts were written by Wolf Mankowitz, best known for his depiction of East End life in '' A Kid for Two Farthings''. Wolf Mankowitz
Cyril Wolf Mankowitz (7 November 1924 – 20 May 1998) was an English writer, playwright and screenwriter. He is particularly known for three novels— '' Make Me an Offer'' (1952), '' A Kid for Two Farthings'' (1953) and ''My Old Man's a Dustman''—and other plays, historical studies, and the screenplays for many successful films which have received awards including the Oscar, Bafta and the Cannes Grand Prix. Early life Mankowitz was born in Fashion Street in Spitalfields in the East End of London, the heart of London's Jewish community until the 1940s, of Russian-Jewish descent. Raymond Huntley
Horace Raymond Huntley (23 April 1904 – 15 June 1990) was an English actor who appeared in dozens of British films from the 1930s to the 1970s. Claude Austin Trevor Schilsky (7 October 1897 – 22 January 1978) was an Irish actor who had a long career in film and television. He played the parson in John Galsworthy's '' Escape'' at the world premiere in London's West End in 1926 and was the only member of the cast to transfer to New York City for the Broadway production a year later. He was the first actor to play Agatha Christie's detective Hercule Poirot on screen in three British films during the early 1930s: ''Alibi'' (1931), '' Black Coffee'' (1931) and '' Lord Edgware Dies'' (1934). Walter Fitzgerald Bond (18 May 1896 – 20 December 1976) was an English character actor. Early life Born in Stoke, Plymouth, Fitzgerald was a former stockbroker before he began his theatrical training at RADA. He joined the British Army during World War I, serving with the Worcestershire Regiment, the Devonshire Regiment, and the Somerset Light Infantry. Career Fitzgerald made his professional stage bow in 1922 and his first film appearance in 1930. He toured with Sir John Martin-Harvey and Sir Seymour Hicks. He was understudy to Sir Gerald du Maurier (1928–29). Fitzgerald appeared in films from the 1930s, often in 'official' roles (policemen, doctors, lawyers).
