District (Taiwan)
Districts are administrative subdivisions of Taiwan's Special municipality (Taiwan), special municipalities of the second level and Provincial city (Taiwan), provincial cities of the third level formerly under its provinces. There are two types of district in the administrative scheme: Ordinary districts are governed directly by the municipality/city government, with district administrators appointed by mayors to four-year terms. The mountain indigenous district is a local government body with elected district chiefs as well as district council serving four-year terms. Chiayi Municipal Museum
The Chiayi Municipal Museum () is a museum in East District, Chiayi City, Taiwan. History The founding of the museum was a collective community effort in the hope to establish a cultural public space for all of the residents of Chiayi City. Among its displays are silk wrappings used to cover Tibetan Buddhist texts and an Islamic jade collection of the Qing emperors. Chiayi City
Chiayi (,), officially known as Chiayi City, is a Provincial city (Taiwan), city located in Chianan Plain in Regions of Taiwan, southwestern Taiwan, surrounded by Chiayi County with a population of 263,188 inhabitants as of January 2023. The Hoanya people inhabited present-day Chiayi under its historical name of ''Tirosen'' prior to the arrival of Han Chinese in Taiwan and was ruled by the Dutch Formosa, Dutch and the Kingdom of Tungning under various names. During the Taiwan under Qing rule, Qing dynasty, Tirosen was governed as part of Taiwan Prefecture in Fuchien Province, Republic of China, Fujian under Zhuluo County and the city was renamed Kagee in 1787. Water Source Water Meter Room
The Water Source Water Meter Room () is a former water meter room in East District, Chiayi City, Taiwan. History The Chiayi waterway was constructed between July 1911 and March 1914 as part of the city waterway facilities. The room which houses the metering facility to measure the water flow was built in 1910 as the Water Meter Room. In 1954, water plants around Chiayi County (which then include Chiayi City at that time) were combined into the Chiayi Water Plant, with the exception of Puzi Water Plant. The Water Meter Room was then also renamed as Water Source Water Meter Room. The land where the meter room is located belongs to the forestry industry and due to the lack of access road to the room building, it was covered with plants and trees. The First 228 Peace Memorial Monument
The First 228 Peace Memorial Monument () is a monument in East District, Chiayi City, Taiwan. It was built in 1989, making it the earliest 228 Memorial Monument built in the island. It is the only 228 Memorial Monument to have been built before the 1990s. It was built as a memorial of the February 28 Incident of 1947, in which more than 10,000 Taiwan residents were killed during an uprising against the government. The monument is one of the landmarks of Chiayi City. Memorial Building There are more than ten memorials commemorating the February 28 Incident in Taiwan. Lantan Lake
Lantan Lake () or Orchid Lake is a lake and reservoir in East District, Chiayi City, Taiwan. History The lake is also called the Holland Lake, Dutch Lake, and Hong-Mao Pei (see ang mo) because the lake was dug by the Dutch around 300 years ago during the Dutch Formosa rule by taking it source from the Bazhang River to irrigate the broad fields run by the Dutch East India Company. This system lasted until the beginning of Kingdom of Tungning in Taiwan in which the lake laid in ruins until the Qing Dynasty rule. Hinoki Village
The Hinoki Village or Cypress Forest Life Village () is a culture village in East District, Chiayi City, Taiwan. History The village was originally the dormitories of the Chiayi Forest division of Forestry Bureau of the Taiwan Governor General Office during the Japanese rule of Taiwan. On 26 February 2009, the Executive Yuan approved the establishment of the center. Construction commenced shortly and was completed in 2013. The transfer of operation of the village was completed on 28 September 2013. The village started its operation in January 2014. Chiayi Prison Museum
Chiayi Old Prison () is a former prison located at 140 Wei Hsin Road, East District, Chiayi City, Taiwan. It underwent restoration and reopened as the Chiayi Prison Museum () in 2011. It was designated as a historic monument of Taiwan in 2005. History Chiayi Prison commenced its operation in 1922 under the name of Tainan Prison Chiayi Branch. In 1994, the Chiayi Prison was relocated to Lucao Township in Chiayi County. Architecture A distinct feature of the Chiayi Old Prison is the radial layout of the prison blocks with a staff positioned hall in the center. In contrast to the design of panopticon prisons, individual cells cannot be seen by the staff in the central hall unless they enter individual prison blocks. Sun-Shooting Tower
The Sun-Shooting Tower () or Chiayi Tower is a tower built inside Chiayi Park, East District, Chiayi City, Taiwan. Architecture The tower stands at a height of 62 meters. Its exterior designed was inspired by a giant sacred tree in Alishan. The brown aluminum pattern mimics the wood grain of the tree and the center is left with a empty space that mimics the crack in the center of that giant sacred tree. The interior bronze sculpture is inspired by the "Sun-Shooting" legend of Taiwanese indigenous peoples. This bronze-made sculpture is 24 meters tall and 3 meters wide. The tower features an observation deck, a café and a small rooftop garden. Kagi Shrine
was a Shinto shrine located in previously ''Soa-a-teng'' (), Kagi City, Tainan Prefecture, Taiwan under Japanese rule, Japanese Taiwan (modern-day Chiayi Park, Chiayi, Chiayi City, Taiwan). The shrine was built on 28 October 1915 (Taishō period, Taishō 4) facing south but later altered in 1942 (Shōwa period, Shōwa 17) to face west.
