ECUARUNARI (in Kichwa: ', "Movement of the indigenous people of Ecuador"), also known as Confederation of Peoples of Kichwa Nationality ('','' in Spanish ') is the organization of indigenous peoples of Kichwa nationality in the Ecuadorian central mountain region, founded in 1972. Twelve ethnic groups of the region— Natabuela, Otavalos, Karanki ''(Caranqui)'', Kayampi ''(Cayambi)'', Kitu Kara ''(Quitu)'', Panzaleo, Salasaca, Chibuleo, Puruhá, Guranga, Kañari and Saraguros—are represented politically by the Confederation. The Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador () or, more commonly, CONAIE, is Ecuador's largest indigenous rights organization. The Ecuadorian Indian movement under the leadership of CONAIE is often cited as the best-organized and most influential Indigenous movement in Latin America. Formed in 1986, CONAIE firmly established itself as a powerful national force in May and June 1990 when it played a role in organising a rural uprising on a national scale. Thousands of people blocked roads, paralyzed the transport system, and shut down the country for a week while making demands for bilingual education, agrarian reform, and recognition of the plurinational state of Ecuador. This was the largest uprising in Ecuador's history and established a new form of contention that would serve as a blueprint for a string of later uprisings. Quechuas
Quechua people (, ; ) , Quichua people or Kichwa people may refer to any of the Indigenous peoples of South America who speak the Quechua languages, which originated among the Indigenous people of Peru. Although most Quechua speakers are native to Peru, there are some significant populations in Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, and Argentina. The most common Quechua dialect is Southern Quechua. The Kichwa people of Ecuador speak the Kichwa language, Kichwa dialect; in Colombia, the Inga people speak Inga Kichwa. Carmen Tiupul
Carmen Tiupul Urquizo is an Ecuadorian politician who serves on the National Assembly representing Chimborazo. She is a member of the Pachakutik Plurinational Unity Movement – New Country party. In 2025 was elected to be the second vice-President of the National Assembly. Life Tiupul comes from Cacha. She has a Business Administration degree and a leadership diploma which she obtained in Chile. Tiupul is a supporter and member of ECUARUNARI which is a confederation of people of Kichwa nationality. In October 2021 she was tried by a court accused of leading the 2019 Ecuadorian protests. She was found guilty and sentenced to two years in prison and a fine equal to seven times her annual income, In time she was granted amnesty for these offences. Kichwa
Kichwa (, , also Spanish ) is a Quechuan language that includes all Quechua varieties of Ecuador and Colombia ('' Inga''), as well as extensions into Peru. It has an estimated half million speakers. Classification Kichwa belongs to the Northern Quechua group of Quechua II, according to linguist Alfredo Torero. History The earliest grammatical description of Kichwa was written in the 17th century by Jesuit priest Hernando de Alcocer. First efforts for language standardization and bilingual education A standardized language, with a unified orthography (, ), has been developed.
