Drummond Community High School
Drummond Community High School (DCHS) is a non-denominational secondary school built originally in 1925 by John Alexander Carfrae which serves the area of north east Edinburgh. Drummond Community High School is on Bellevue Place and was originally known as Bellevue Junior Secondary School. The catchment area serves an area to the east of the city including the southern areas of Leith, Hillside, Abbeyhill, Broughton and Bellevue. In addition to the school roll of 352, the school provides places for over 400 adult day learners and approximately 400 adult learners. John Alexander Carfrae
John Alexander Carfrae (1868–1947) was a Scottish architect of particular note in the field of innovative school design. He was considered one of the best architects of his generation, but his works were rather limited as he was constrained to the standard board school formats. Life Born in Edinburgh the son of Thomas Carfrae, a civil engineer. He was the younger brother of George Somervil Carfae, also a civil engineer. The family lived at 9 Osborne Terrace in Edinburgh's West End. He was educated at James Gillespie's High School. Carfrae was articled in 1881 to Robert Wilson, architect for the Edinburgh School Board. In 1889 he moved to London to be an assistant to Arthur Cawston, but transferred to HM Office of Works to work under Henry Tanner. Leith (; gd, Lìte) is a port area in the north of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland, founded at the mouth of the Water of Leith. Abbeyhill
Abbeyhill is an area of Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. Abbeyhill is one of the oldest parts of the city, taking its name from Holyrood Abbey, a major historic religious site. The main east-west thoroughfare through the area is London Road, laid in the 1820s as part of the Calton development of the New Town. This superseded an older road to Haddington which still skirts the north side of the Holyrood Park. As with many other parts of the city, the area has varying definitions. Broughton () is an ancient feudal barony, today within the City of Edinburgh, Scotland. Ancient barony The feudal barony of Broughton in the 16th and 17th centuries was in the hands of the Bellenden family, who had made their money in the legal profession.
