Donald Stewart (judge)
Donald Gerard Stewart (25 November 1928 – 14 July 2016) was an Australian judge, barrister, police officer, Royal Commissioner, and founding chairman of the National Crime Authority of Australia. He spent a lifetime fighting police corruption and drug trafficking and detailed many of his experiences in his memoirsRecollections of an Unreasonable Man. He attended Sydney Boys High School from 1941 to 1946. He died in 2016 at the age of 87. National Crime Authority
The National Crime Authority (NCA) was an Australian law enforcement agency established in 1984 and wound up on 31 December 2002. History The NCA was set up in 1984 in the wake of the Costigan Commission, which investigated tax evasion and organised crime. It was intended to lead a national law enforcement response to organised crime which could overcome the jurisdictional barriers of the Australian federal system. It had extraordinary powers which removed many of the barriers which prevented other enforcement organisations from being able to comprehensively investigate or prosecute. The NCA was frequently criticised both for misuse of these powers and lack of effectiveness. Royal Commission Of Inquiry Into Drug Trafficking
The Royal Commission of Inquiry into Drug Trafficking (1981–1983), also known as the Stewart Royal Commission, was a Royal Commission set up in 1981 by the Commonwealth, Queensland, New South Wales and Victorian governments to inquire into various drug trafficking and related criminal activities of Terrance John Clark and his associates. However, the Commission would spend much of its time examining how criminals were using and abusing the passport system for criminal purposes including the fact that Clark had 5passports under different names with him when he was arrested in 1978.
