Discovery Islands
The Discovery Islands are a group of islands located at the northern end of the Salish Sea and the eastern end of Johnstone Strait, between Vancouver Island and the mainland coast of British Columbia, Canada. Most of these islands have very few residents. Only Quadra Island and Cortes Island have ferry service. The remainder are served by private boat or float plane. Geography The complex geography of the area can make it difficult to determine when travelling by boat if a sighted coastline belongs to the mainland, Vancouver Island, or one of the Discovery Islands. Hardwicke Island
Hardwicke Island is an island in British Columbia, Canada, measuring approximately . Geography Hardwicke Island lies directly off the coast of the village of Sayward and to the west of its neighbour West Thurlow Island. Hardwicke Island is located within Electoral Area C of the Strathcona Regional District. Hardwicke Island is closely connected to the Bendickson, a Norwegian family who began logging operations on the island beginning in 1918, and who continued thereafter to live on or visit the island while growing fruit and vegetables there. Twin Islands (British Columbia)
Twin Islands, formerly known as the Ulloa Islands, are two small islands southeast of Cortes Island, between the eastern coast of Vancouver Island and the mainland of British Columbia, Canada and are part of the Discovery Islands. The southern island is about in diameter and is separated from the slightly smaller northern island by a channel only about wide. The north island is somewhat less rocky and more forested than the south island. They are located within Electoral Area B of the Strathcona Regional District. Marina Island
A marina (from Spanish , Portuguese and Italian : ''marina'', "coast" or "shore") is a dock or basin with moorings and supplies for yachts and small boats. A marina differs from a port in that a marina does not handle large passenger ships or cargo from freighters. The word ''marina'' may also refer to an inland wharf on a river or canal that is used exclusively by non-industrial pleasure craft such as canal narrowboats. Emplacement Marinas may be located along the banks of rivers connecting to lakes or seas and may be inland. East Redonda Island
East Redonda Island is a coastal island in British Columbia, Canada, part of the Discovery Islands archipelago. It lies just to the north of Desolation Sound Marine Park, which is located off the north end of the Malaspina Peninsula at the mouth of Toba Inlet within Electoral Area C of the Strathcona Regional District. It is part of the Discovery Islands, an archipelago between Vancouver Island and the mainland, and between the Strait of Georgia and Johnstone Strait. Mitlenatch Island Nature Provincial Park
Mitlenatch Island Nature Provincial Park is a provincial park in British Columbia, Canada, located on Mitlenatch Island a small islet in the northern Strait of Georgia within the Strathcona Regional District. History In 1959, the Province of British Columbia purchased Mitlenatch from a local family and in 1961 it was designated as a Provincial Nature Park. Mitlenatch is a First Nations word with a number of meanings. In Coast Salish it has been translated to mean ‘calm waters all around’. Perhaps the most descriptive meaning comes from the Sliammon language where ‘metl’ meant calm and ‘nach’ meant posterior. Maurelle Island is an island in British Columbia, Canada. It is part of the Discovery Islands between Vancouver Island and the mainland, between the Strait of Georgia and Johnstone Strait. Etymology Maurelle Island was given its name in 1903 by the Geographical Names Board of Canada, in honor of the Spanish naval officer Francisco Antonio Mourelle de la Rúa. Stuart Island (British Columbia)
Stuart Island is one of the Discovery Islands of British Columbia, which lie between northern Vancouver Island and the British Columbia Coast. It is privately owned and has no ferry access. It is situated at the mouth of Bute Inlet to the east of the larger Sonora Island within Electoral Area C of the Strathcona Regional District. The island, and Bute Inlet, were named for John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1762 to 1763. The island is mostly home to exclusive fishing lodges and large private estates. Most of the visitors arrive by float plane or helicopter.
