Decree 349
Decree 349 is a 2018 Cuban law requiring artists to obtain advance permission for public and private exhibitions and performances. The law was first proposed April 20, 2018 by Cuban president Miguel Díaz-Canel, and was published in the Gaceta de Cuba on July 10. The law gives the government the right to shut down art and book sales, exhibitions, concerts and performances that contain prohibited content. In particular, the law bans art that contains “sexist, vulgar and obscene language” and art using “national symbols” to “contravene current legislation.” Government inspectors fine those breaking the law, and confiscate artwork that contravenes the law. Artists are also restricted from selling artwork without government approval. The law went into effect on December 7, 2018. Cuban Law
The substantive and procedural laws of Cuba were later based on the Spanish Civil laws and were influenced by the principles of Marxism-Leninism after that philosophy became the guiding force of government. The Family Code The Family Code covers marriage, divorce, marital property relationships, recognition of children, obligations for children’s care and education, adoption, and tutelage. Miguel Díaz-Canel
Miguel Mario Díaz-Canel y Bermúdez (; born 20 April 1960) also known as MADCB, is a politician and engineer who is the third first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba. Díaz-Canel succeeds the brothers Fidel and Raúl Castro, making him the first non-Castro leader of Cuba since the revolution. Díaz-Canel's leadership thus represents a non-dynastic form of succession for the party as well as for the state, and the end of Castro leadership in Cuba. Díaz-Canel has been a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party since 2003, and served as Minister of Higher Education from 2009 to 2012. He was promoted to the post of Vice President of the Council of Ministers (Deputy Prime Minister) in 2012. A year later, in 2013, he was elected as First Vice President of the Council of State. San Isidro Movement
The San Isidro Movement (, abbreviated MSI) is a group of Cuban artists, journalists and academics formed in 2018 to protest against the government's increased censorship of artistic expression in Cuba. The group's members have staged protests, performances and interventions that have resulted in arrests and retaliatory actions by the Cuban government. Members Notable members of MSI include rapper Denis Solís and performance artist Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara. History The group formed in September 2018 as a reaction to Decree 349, a Cuban law that sought to require that artistic activity had to be authorized in advance by the Cuban culture ministry. The group took its name from the San Isidro area of Havana, where it was formed.
