De Havilland Gipsy Minor
The de Havilland Gipsy Minor or Gipsy Junior is a British four-cylinder, air-cooled, inline engine that was used primarily in the de Havilland Moth Minor monoplane, both products being developed in the late 1930s. Design and development The engine was a simplified and smaller version of the earlier de Havilland Gipsy. It featured only one magneto where dual ignition was normal for the Gipsy series of engines. A total of 171 engines were produced, including 100 built in Australia, production moving to that country due to the start of the Second World War.Lumsden 2003, p.136. Air-cooled engines rely on the circulation of air directly over heat dissipation fins or hot areas of the engine to cool them in order to keep the engine within operating temperatures. In all combustion engines, a great percentage of the heat generated (around 44%) escapes through the exhaust, not through the metal fins of an air-cooled engine (12%). About 8% of the heat energy is transferred to the oil, which although primarily meant for lubrication, also plays a role in heat dissipation via a cooler. The Walter Mikron is a four-cylinder, air-cooled, inverted straight engine for aircraft. Development Developed in Czechoslovakia in the early 1930s, the engine saw limited use in late 1930s and early 1950s. In the 1980s an initial batch of engines was rebuilt by Aerotechnik Moravska Trebova for use on L-13 Vivat motorgliders. Production of new engines followed. ERCO I-L 116
The ERCO IL-116 was an American Inline engine (aviation), inline aircraft engine designed and built in the late 1930s. The type was not placed into series production due to competition from cheaper engines. Design and development In late 1938 in aviation, 1938, the Engineering and Research Corporation (ERCO) searched unsuccessfully for a suitable engine for its new "safe" airplane, the Ercoupe. ERCO hired Harold Morehouse, former engineer in charge of small engine design at Continental Motors Company, Continental Motors, to design a new engine. He came up with the inverted, in-line IL-116, which provided good pilot visibility and enhanced aircraft streamlining. ERCO installed the IL-116 in the prototype Ercoupe Model 310 in 1939 in aviation, 1939.
