David Steele (musician)
David "Shuffle" Steele (born 8 September 1960) is an English musician who was a member of the Beat and Fine Young Cannibals. Career He was born in Cowes, Isle of Wight. From 1978 to 1983, Steele was bassist in the 2 Tone ska revival band the Beat, (known in the United States as the English Beat). After Ranking Roger and Dave Wakeling left the Beat to form General Public, Steele and guitarist Andy Cox recruited singer Roland Gift to form Fine Young Cannibals, whose career lasted into the early 1990s. In 1988, while FYC were on hiatus, Cox and Steele released the instrumental house music single, "Tired of Getting Pushed Around", under the name of Two Men, a Drum Machine and a Trumpet. It reached No. 18 on the UK Singles Chart. That same year, they also collaborated with Wee Papa Girl Rappers on the single "Heat It Up" which reached No. 21. Cowes
Cowes () is an English seaport town and civil parish on the Isle of Wight. Cowes is located on the west bank of the estuary of the River Medina, facing the smaller town of East Cowes on the east bank. The two towns are linked by the Cowes Floating Bridge, a chain ferry. As of 2020 it had an estimated population of 14,724. Charles Godfrey Leland's 19th-century verses describe the towns poetically as "The two great Cowes that in loud thunder roar/This on the eastern, that the western shore". Cowes has been seen as a home for international yacht racing since the founding of the Royal Yacht Squadron in 1815. Dave Wakeling
David Wakeling (born 19 February 1956) is an English singer, songwriter and musician, best known for his work with the band the Beat (known in North America as the English Beat) and General Public. Career Wakeling began his professional career when he formed the band, the Beat. The debut studio album by the Beat included the singles " I Just Can't Stop It", " Mirror in the Bathroom", " Hands Off...She's Mine" and " Can't Get Used to Losing You", all of which charted within the Top 10 on the UK Singles Chart. The band also had UK hits from the studio albums '' Wha'ppen?'' (1981) and ''Special Beat Service'' (1982). Wakeling then formed General Public with Ranking Roger in 1984, and they released their debut studio album '' All the Rage'' that year. "Good Thing" is a song recorded by British band Fine Young Cannibals, released as the second single from their second and last album, ''The Raw & the Cooked (album), The Raw & the Cooked'' (1989). "Mirror in the Bathroom" is a single by British ska band the Beat released as a single in 1980 from their debut album '' I Just Can't Stop It''. It reached number 4 in the UK Singles Chart and consequently was their highest charting release in the UK until 1983. It was released again in 1995 as a 12" single and early in 1996 as a CD single (both containing contemporary club remixes) to promote '' B.P.M.: The Very Best of the Beat''. Wee Papa Girl Rappers
Wee Papa Girl Rappers were a British female rap duo, that found chart success in the late 1980s. They were twin sisters Sandra and Samantha Lawrence. Overview Before being signed to Jive Records, the two sisters were backing singers for Feargal Sharkey. Sandra Lawrence (aka Total S) and Samantha Lawrence (aka TY Tim) are best remembered for the single " Wee Rule" – more inspired by reggae and dancehall than rap/hip hop – which reached number 6 on the UK Singles Chart in October 1988. Another of their singles, "Heat it Up" featuring 2 Men and a Drum Machine, reached number 21 on the UK Singles Chart in June 1988.
