David Sassoli
David Maria Sassoli (; 30 May 1956 – 11 January 2022) was an Italian politician and journalist who served as the president of the European Parliament from 3 July 2019 until his death on 11 January 2022. Sassoli was first elected as a member of the European Parliament (MEP) in 2009. Early life and career David Sassoli was born in Florence in 1956 to Tuscan parents from Florence and Prato. His name "David Maria" was chosen by his father in honour of , an Italian presbyter and theologian. He studied at the department of political science at the Sapienza University of Rome. He began his career as a journalist at the newspaper '' Il Tempo'' in Rome, before collaborating with various newspapers and the news agency ''ASCA''. ''Il Tempo'' (meaning ''Time'' in English) is a daily Italian newspaper published in Rome, Italy. History and profile ''Il Tempo'' was founded in Rome by Renato Angiolillo in 1944. At the initial phase the newspaper was a conservative publication and had an anti-communist stance. The paper publishes the Rome edition (available nationally) and other five local editions (Latina, Frosinone, Northern Lazio, Abruzzo and Molise). In 1996 the former owner, Caltagirone Editore, sold the newspaper to the Italian builder Domenico Bonifaci. On 4 October 2007 the paper switched from broadsheet format to Berliner. ''la Repubblica'' (; the Republic) is an Italian daily general-interest newspaper. The 2009 European Parliament election in Italy was held on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 June 2009, as decided by the Italian government on 18 December 2008. Italy elected 72 members of the European Parliament (MEPs). Electoral system The party-list proportional representation was the traditional electoral system of the Italian Republic from its establishment in 1946 to 1994, therefore it was also adopted to elect the Italian members of the European Parliament (MEPs) since 1979. Two levels were introduced: a national level to divide the seats among parties and a constituency level to distribute them among candidates in open lists. Five constituencies were established, each including 2–5 regions and each electing a fixed number of MEPs. At national level, seats are divided between party lists using the largest remainder method with Hare quota. Seats are allocated to parties and then to their most voted candidates. Gianni Riotta (born 1954 in Palermo, Italy) is an Italian journalist, a regular contributor for the daily newspaper La Stampa and a former editor-in-chief of the financial newspaper ''Il Sole 24 Ore'', Rai 3 and the news bulletin TG1. ''Il Giorno'' is an Italian-language national daily newspaper, based in Milan, Italy; it has numerous local editions in Lombardy. History and profile ''Il Giorno'' was founded by the Italian businessman Cino Del Duca on 21 March 1956, with the journalist Gaetano Baldacci, to challenge ''Corriere della Sera'', also a daily newspaper published in Milan.
