David J. Honey
David John Honey (born 18 April 1958) is an Australian politician who has been the Liberal Party member for the electoral district of Cottesloe in the Western Australian Legislative Assembly since 2018. He was leader of the WA Liberal Party between March 2021 and January 2023, and was previously the Shadow Minister for Industrial Development, Water and Lands, and the Liberal Party's Legislative Assembly Policy Co-ordinator. Education and early career Honey completed a Bachelor of Science with first-class Honours and a PhD in Chemistry at the University of Western Australia, as well as being the UWA Science Union President. He has held technical roles including as a Forensic Scientist and Environmental Scientist with the State Government, and also formed the Hydrometallurgy Research Group for Western Australian Mining Corporation. Western Australian Legislative Assembly
The Western Australian Legislative Assembly, or lower house, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Western Australia, an Australian state. The Parliament sits in Parliament House in the Western Australian capital, Perth. The Legislative Assembly today has 59 members, elected for four-year terms from single-member electoral districts. Members are elected using the preferential voting system. As with all other Australian states and territories, voting is compulsory for all Australian citizens over the legal voting age of 18. Role and operation Most legislation in Western Australia is initiated in the Legislative Assembly. 2018 Cottesloe State By-election
A by-election for the electoral district of Cottesloe in Western Australia took place on 17 March 2018. The by-election was triggered by the resignation of the Liberal Party member, Colin Barnett, on 5 February 2018. Barnett was the Premier of Western Australia from 23 September 2008 until 17 March 2017, when he was succeeded as Premier by Mark McGowan after the Labor Party defeated Barnett's Liberal government at the 2017 state election in March 2017. The by-election was won by the Liberal candidate David Honey. Dates The writ for the by-election was issued by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Peter Watson, on 6 February 2018. The by-election was held on 17 March 2018, the same day as the South Australian state election and the Batman federal by-election. David Johnston (Australian Politician)
David Albert Lloyd Johnston (born 14 February 1956) is an Australian politician who was a Liberal Party member of the Australian Senate from 2002 to 2016, representing the state of Western Australia. Johnston was the Minister for Defence from 18 September 2013 to 23 December 2014, when he was replaced by Kevin Andrews. Background and career Johnston was born in Perth and was educated at University of Western Australia, where he graduated in law. He was a barrister in Kalgoorlie before entering politics, representing companies such as Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie LTD and North Kalgurli Mines LTD. He unsuccessfully contested the House of Representatives at the 1987 federal election, polling 37.3% of first preferences to finish second behind the then Labor incumbent Graeme Campbell in the Division of Kalgoorlie. Bill Hassell
William Ralph Boucher Hassell, best known as Bill Hassell, (born 6 June 1943) is an Australian former Liberal Party politician who was Leader of the Opposition in Western Australia during the mid-1980s. He was a member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly seat of Cottesloe between 1977 and 1990. Early life After attending Hale School, Hassell attended the University of Western Australia (UWA), graduating in 1965 with a Bachelor of Laws. He entered legal practice in 1966. She played a role in obtaining the acquittal of Andrew Mallard, a Western Australian man who had been wrongfully convicted of murder. The Liberal Party of Australia (Western Australian Division), branded as Liberal Western Australia, is the division of the Liberal Party of Australia in Western Australia. Founded in March 1949 as the Liberal and Country League of Western Australia (LCL), it simplified its name to the Liberal Party in 1968. There was a previous Western Australian division of the Liberal Party when the Liberal Party was formed in 1945, but it ceased to exist and merged into the LCL in May 1949.
