Damghan County
Damghan County ( fa, شهرستان دامغان) is located in Semnan province, Iran. The capital of the county is Damghan. At the 2006 census, the county's population was 81,993, in 23,020 households. Retrieved 7 November 2022 At the 2016 census, the county's population was 94,190, in 30,296 households. Administrative divisions City and towns The Ali Spring ( Cheshmeh-ye Ali) is located there, not be confused with the Cheshmeh-ye Ali in Rey, south Tehran. Amirabad District forms the major part of the county. The three cities are Damghan, Dibaj and Amiriyeh. Other important villages in the county are: Mehmandust, Naimabad, Tazareh, Tuyeh & Darvar, Qusheh, Hasanabad, and Rashm. History The area suffered damage in the 856 Damghan earthquake. Gerdkuh
Gerdkuh was a castle of the Nizari Isma'ili state located near Damghan in the region of Qumis (modern-day Semnan Province of Iran). Gerdkuh is a "fortified mountain"—a high vertical rock of 300 m in height with buildings on its summit and fortifications at its sides, defended by a triple ring of fortifications at its foot, making the citadel impregnable to direct military assault. It was originally a small fort acquired and refortified in 1096 AD by a Seljuq commander who was secretly a Nizari. The fortress served as a place of refuge for the families of the Nizaris, and its strategic location in the middle of the Khorasan Road made it a useful base for collecting taxes from the passing caravans of the Silk Road. Gerdkuh resisted the Mongol invasion of 1253 AD for 17 years, becoming the last Nizari stronghold in Persia to fall. The fortress remained in use until the early Safavid period. Imamzadeh
An imamzadeh () is a Persian term with two related meanings: a type of holy person in Shia Islam, and the shrine-tomb of such a person. Firstly, it means an immediate descendant of a Shi'i Imam. 856 Damghan Earthquake
The 856 Damghan earthquake or the 856 Qumis earthquake occurred on 22 December 856 (242 AH). The earthquake had an estimated magnitude of 7.9, and a maximum intensity of X (''Extreme'') on the Mercalli intensity scale. The meizoseismal area (area of maximum damage) extended for about along the southern edge of the eastern Alborz mountains of present-day Iran including parts of Tabaristan and Gorgan. The earthquake's epicenter is estimated to be close to the city of Damghan, which was then the capital of the Persian province of Qumis. It caused approximately 200,000 deaths and is listed by the USGS as the sixth deadliest earthquake in recorded history. This death toll has been debated.
