Dunbar, Iowa
Dunbar is an unincorporated community and former railroad depot village in Green Castle Township, Marshall County, Iowa, United States. History Dunbar was platted in 1882 in Greencastle Township, halfway between LeGrand and Gilman. Many of the settlers were from Norway, and the church established there was associated with the United Norwegian Lutheran Church. The Dunbar Creamery Company, a co-op, was organized in 1901. A grain company and lumber business followed. The Dunbar Savings Bank was organized in 1909. Dunbar also had a post office and general store in that era. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and location information about more than two million physical and cultural features, encompassing the United States and its territories; the Compact of Free Association, associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau; and Antarctica. Gilman is a city in the southeastern corner of Marshall County, Iowa, United States. The population was 542 at the time of the 2020 census. History Gilman got its start in the year 1870, following construction of the Central Railroad of Iowa through the territory. The town is named for Charles Gilman, a railroad contractor. Gilman was incorporated in 1876. Gilman celebrates No-Rivers Day at the Gilman No-Rivers Festival. The annual festival is orchestrated by the Gilman Events committee. Area code 641 is a telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the central region of the U.S. state of Iowa. The numbering plan area (NPA) includes Mason City, and Ottumwa. The area code was created in a split of area code 515 on July 9, 2000, which was the first split in Iowa since the establishment of the area code system in 1947. In 2006, various companies began using Iowa's 641 as a number to access voice over IP gateways, including one which purported to allow users to "call China for free". The scheme, no longer in operation, was based on the wholesale cost of calls to rural Iowa being substantially more than the cost of Internet calls to China.
