Duke Of Mecklenburg-Güstrow
This list of dukes and grand dukes of Mecklenburg dates from the origins of the Germany, German princely state of Mecklenburg's royal house in the High Middle Ages to the monarchy's abolition at the end of World War I. Strictly speaking, Mecklenburg's princely dynasty was descended linearly from the princes (or kings) of a Slavic tribe, the Obotrites, and had its original residence in a castle (Mecklenburg Castle, Mecklenburg) in Dorf Mecklenburg (Mikelenburg) close to Wismar."Fürsten und Gutsherren..." As part of a feudal union under German law from 1160—at first under the Saxons—Mecklenburg was granted imperial immediacy in 1348 and its princely rulers styled Dukes of Mecklenburg. Despite several Main partititons of Mecklenburg, partitions, Mecklenburg remained an integral state until the end of the monarchy. Niklot
Niklot or Nyklot (died August 1160) was a tribal chief, chief or prince of the Slavic peoples, Slavic Obotrites and an ancestor of the House of Mecklenburg. He became chief of the Obotrite confederacy, including the Kissini and the Circipani, between the years 1130 and 1131. He remained in this position until his death in 1160. At the same time he was Lord of (''Herr zu'') Schwerin, Quetzin and Malchow. For nearly 30 years he resisted Saxons, Saxon princes, especially Henry the Lion during the Wendish Crusade. Resistance Niklot began his open resistance when the German King (later Emperor) Lothar III granted the Obotrite realm to his Denmark, Danish vassal Canute Lavard. Together with Pribislav of Wagria, son of Budivoj and nephew of Henry (Obotrite prince), Henry, Niklot fought Lothar and Canute.
