Drancy () is a commune in the northeastern suburbs of Paris in the Seine-Saint-Denis department in northern France. It is located 10.8 km (6.7 mi) from the center of Paris. History Toponymy The name Drancy comes from Medieval Latin ''Derenciacum'', and before that ''Terentiacum'', meaning "estate of Terentius", a Gallo-Roman landowner. Origins to 20th century In the 17th century, Drancy was divided into two distinct villages: Drancy le Grand and le Petit Drancy. The quarter "Village Parisien" is built on the old location of the hamlet of Groslay, which was surrounded by the Forest of Bondy: hence the name of rue des Bois de Groslay. The (, ''City Hall'') is a municipal building in Drancy, Seine-Saint-Denis, France in the northeastern suburbs of Paris standing on Place de l'Hotel de Ville. History Following the French Revolution, the town council initially rented premises for its meetings. However, in November 1840, the council acquired the home of the Levasseur family at a cost of FFr 5,488. The building was located on the south side of what is now Rue du Père Liegibel, close to the Church of Saint-Germain l'Auxerrois, which has since been demolished. The design involved a symmetrical main frontage of three bays facing onto Rue du Père Liegibel. Shelomo Selinger (; born 31 May 1928) is a sculptor and artist living and working in Paris since 1956. Biography Selinger was born to a Jewish family in the small Polish town of Szczakowa (today part of Jaworzno) near Oświęcim (Auschwitz''Le Petit Larousse'' 2008, éd. Larousse, Paris 1141). He received both a traditional Jewish upbringing and a Polish public school education. In 1943 he was deported with his father from the Chrzanów ghetto to the Faulbrück concentration camp in Germany. Three months later his father was murdered and Selinger remained alone in the camp. His mother and one of his sisters also perished during the Holocaust. Selinger survived nine German death camps: Faulbrück, Gröditz, Markstadt, Fünfteichen, Gross-Rosen, Flossenburg, Dresden, Leitmeritz and finally Theresienstadt, as well as two death marches.
