Doğan Yurdakul
Doğan Yurdakul (1946 – September 3, 2017 in Datça) is a Turkish journalist and writer. He has contributed to newspapers including '' Vatan'', ''Aydınlık'', ''Evrensel'', '' Siyah-Beyaz'', and '' Günaydın'' as well as the television news programme 32. Gün. His books include biographies of Turkish intelligence agent Hiram Abas and of Abdullah Çatlı (''Reis''), both written with Soner Yalçın. Yurdakul is charged in the Odatv case of the Ergenekon trials; he was the news co-ordinator of odatv. He was arrested in March 2011 and released on health grounds in February 2012. Both of the trials later were dismissed on grounds of judicial irregularities while confirming the evidence presented to be falsified. Aydınlık
''Aydınlık'' ("Clarify" or "Enlightenment" in Turkish) is the newspaper of the Patriotic Party (''Vatan Partisi''). Originally launched as a weekly newspaper in 1921, it has been repeatedly closed and relaunched, most recently in 2011. History Early history ''Aydınlık'' was launched in 1921 as the Ottoman Empire's first socialist newspaper (a weekly); it was associated with the Communist Party of Turkey. It was closed down in 1925. In the interim it published authors such as Nâzım Hikmet, Şevket Süreyya Aydemir, Hasan Âli and Kerim Sadi. ''Evrensel'' () is a Turkish daily newspaper. History and profile ''Evrensel'' was founded on 7 June 1995. The issues captured and written are from a socialist perspective. Hiram Abas
Hiram Abas (1932 in Istanbul – 26 September 1990) was a Turkish intelligence official in the National Intelligence Organization (Turkey), National Intelligence Organization (MIT). He retired after the 1980 Turkish coup d'état, but returned in August 1986 as deputy to MIT chief Hayri Ündül, retiring again in 1988. He was assassinated on 26 September 1990 by leftwing revolutionary group Dev Sol. Abdullah Çatlı
Abdullah Çatlı (1 June 1956 – 3 November 1996) was a Turkish secret government agent, as well as a contract killer for the National Intelligence Organization (MİT). He led the Grey Wolves, the youth branch of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), during the 1970s. His death in the Susurluk car crash, while travelling in a car with state officials, revealed the depth of the state's complicity in organized crime in what became known as the Susurluk scandal. He was a hitman for the state, and was involved in the killings of suspected members of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and the Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia (ASALA). Soner Yalçın (born January 1, 1966) is a Turkish journalist and writer. The co-founder of the news website odatv, he was arrested in February 2011 along with other odatv journalists and charged with links to the Ergenekon organization. He was released pending trial in December 2012. Career Soner Yalçın is an investigative journalist specialized in reporting about the deep state in Turkey. He began working in 1987 for the center left-wing periodical called ''2000'e Doğru'' ("Towards 2000") as a permanent political correspondent in Ankara. Odatv Case
The Ergenekon trials or the Ergenekon conspiracy, were a series of high-profile trials which took place in 2008–2016 in Turkey in which 275 people, including military officers, journalists and opposition lawmakers, all alleged members of Ergenekon, a suspected secularist clandestine organization, were accused of plotting against the Turkish government. The trials resulted in lengthy prison sentences for the majority of the accused. Those sentences were overturned shortly after. Since Istanbul Heavy Penal Court 13 (tr: ''13. Odatv
OdaTV ''(also known as Odatv.com, Odatv or odaTV),'' an online news portal based in Turkey, was founded in 2007. It is one of the most followed news portals in Turkey and according to the Alexa statistics, it is the 119th most visited website in the country (Turkey). The portal was founded by Soner Yalçın and Cüneyt Özdemir. Özdemir soon left after a difference of opinion. OdaTV was described in 2012 by the Committee to Protect Journalists as a portal which is "harshly critical of the government". In the early 2011, Odatv case was initiated as part of the Ergenekon trials, with OdaTV accused of being the "media arm" of the Ergenekon organization. Twelve of its journalists were under indictment in connection with the case, which Reporters without Borders has called "absurd".
