Down (film)
''Down'' (re-titled ''The Shaft'' on US releases) is a 2001 science fiction horror film written and directed by Dick Maas and starring James Marshall, Naomi Watts, and Eric Thal. It is a remake of the 1983 Dutch-language film , which was also directed by Maas. Watts plays the role of pushy journalist Jennifer Evans, and Marshall as repairman and former Marine Mark Newman. The movie was mainly filmed in the Netherlands, although the crew briefly visited New York City and the District of Columbia as well for exterior shots. The film was funded by Nederlands Fonds, and produced by First Floor Features and AVRO, with post-production by Sapex Scripts. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2001, and was released direct to video in the United States two years later. Dick Maas
Dirk Herman Willem Maas (Dick) (born 15 April 1951) is a Dutch film director, screenwriter, film producer and film composer. Career Maas achieved fame after the success of his music videos for the Dutch band Golden Earring, including "Twilight Zone (Golden Earring song), Twilight Zone" and the controversial "When the Lady Smiles," and his films , ''Amsterdamned'' and ''Flodder'' in the 1980s. Maas also directed the controversial Saint Nicolas slasher ''Sint'' (Saint Nick) and one episode of the TV series ''Young Indiana Jones''. The film ''Character (1997 film), Karakter'' won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1998. Maas served as executive producer. Blue Underground is an American company specializing in releasing remastered editions of cult, horror, and exploitation movies on DVD. It was founded in 2002 by filmmaker William Lustig. It was originally formed as a shell company to oversee 'making of' documentaries during founder William Lustig's time at Anchor Bay Entertainment, but became an independent entity in late 2002. The Lift
''The Lift'' () is a 1983 Dutch science fiction horror film written and directed by Dick Maas. The plot concerns an elevator that mysteriously begins to function intelligently on its own, where victims who go near the elevator or use it are killed. The film was first released in the Netherlands on 11 May 1983. Warner Bros. acquired the international distribution rights for the film outside the Netherlands and Belgium. An American remake was also directed by Maas, titled '' Down'' and released in 2001. Plot In a building in Amsterdam, an elevator inexplicably begins to function alone.
