"Dover–Calais" is a ballad song written by Tommy Ekman and Christer Sandelin, and originally performed by Style (Swedish band), Style on 22 March 1986 at Melodifestivalen 1986, Melodifestivalen where the song ended up third. The song lyrics describe a love meeting between two people on board a ferryboat moving across the English Channel between the United Kingdom, UK and France in a pre-"Channel Tunnel, Chunnel" era. The song topped the Swedish singles chart, and peaked at 6th position in Norway. At Svensktoppen the song stayed for 18 weeks between the period of 13 April–29 June 1986, topping the chart during the seven first weeks. Style (Swedish Band)
Style is a Sweden, Swedish Pop music, pop band which had its greatest success in the 1980s. Style was formed by three former Freestyle (Swedish band), Freestyle members in 1983. They participated in the Swedish Melodifestivalen 1986 with their song "Dover–Calais" finishing third, and 1987 with their song "Hand i hand" finishing sixth. Style split in 1989 due to musical differences. They were reunited again for the Swedish Melodifestivalen 2003 with their song "Stay the Night". In 2006, Style returned for a nostalgia tour in Sweden and Norway. In 2009, Christer Sandelin and Tommy Ekman briefly reunited under the name of Style and released the compilation album ''Best Of Style'' with new tracks "När Jag Ser Dig" and "Vill ha dej igen". Sweden was represented at the Eurovision Song Contest 1986 with the song "", written by Lasse Holm, and performed by Lasse Holm and Monica Törnell. The Swedish participating broadcaster, (SVT), selected its entry through 1986. Before Eurovision 1986 1986 was the contest for the 26th song to represent at the Eurovision Song Contest. 90 songs had been submitted to (SVT) for the competition; 10 of these were performed at the contest, which was held at Cirkus in Stockholm on 22 March 1986. It was presented by Lennart Swahn and Tommy Engstrand and was broadcast on TV1. No orchestra was used, and instead the ten songs were broadcast as music videos. The five songs that qualified for the second round were performed live to backing track. Svensktoppen has aired since 1962, except for the years 1982–1985. In the years leading up to the January 2003 change, the programme was strongly dominated by dansband music. Ballad
A ballad is a form of verse, often a narrative set to music. Ballads were particularly characteristic of the popular poetry and song of Great Britain and Ireland from the Late Middle Ages until the 19th century. They were widely used across Europe, and later in Australia, North Africa, North America and South America.
