Dona Dumitru Siminică
Dona Dumitru Siminică (1926–1979) was a Romanian violinist and singer of lăutar music. He recorded prolifically for the Romanian state record label Electrecord from the late 1950s until the end of his life. Biography Siminică was born on 13 September 1926 in Teiș near Târgoviște, a small city not far from Bucharest, Romania. He was the son of a Roma violinist named Nicolae Siminică, from whom he also learned to play the violin. His father also worked in construction, a trade which Dona Dumitru trained in as well. It was to work in construction that the family relocated to Bucharest. In the mid 1940s, at age 18 Siminică became the leader of a lautar music group in the Piața Amzei and then after five years he led another in the Piața Sfantul Gheorghe. He became known for his immense repertoire of vocal and instrumental music, including nineteenth century court music and other rare pieces inherited from his family. Lăutari And Lăutărească Music
The Romanian word lăutar (; plural: ''lăutari'') denotes a class of musicians. The term was adopted by members of a professional clan of Romani musicians in the late XVIII century. The term is derived from ''lăută'', the Romanian word for lute. ''Lăutari'' usually perform in bands, called taraf. Terminology ''Lăutar'', according to the DEX ("Dicționarul Explicativ al Limbii Române" — "The Explanatory Dictionary of the Romanian Language"), is formed from ''lăută'' (meaning "lute") and the agent suffix ''-ar'', common for occupational names. Originally, the word was used only for the peasant romanian musicians who played the ''lăută''. A distinction should be made between the generic Romanian-language word ''lăutar'' and the Romani clan. Gabi Luncă (16 October 1938 – 2 April 2021) was a Romanian-Romani lăutar musician. Born in Vărbilău, Prahova County, Romania, she was also a folk singer. Life Her father was also part of the ''lăutari'', a very respected violinist because he was a "notist" (he knew how to read music). Her mother died when she was very young and this left a major impression on her life; many of her songs deal with the "mother" theme. She was a favorite of Romania's communist ruler Nicolae Ceaușescu and his wife Elena. In the later part of her life, Gabi Luncă converted to Pentecostalism and started singing exclusively religious music. She was married to the great accordionist Ion Stan-Onoriu. Gabi Luncă died of COVID-19 in Bucharest, at the age of 82. Maria Tănase (; 25 September 1913 – 22 June 1963) was a Romanian singer and actress. Her music ranged from traditional Romanian music to romance, tango, chanson and operetta. Tănase has a similar importance in Romania as Édith Piaf in France or Amália Rodrigues in Portugal. In her nearly three-decade-long career, she became widely regarded as Romania's national diva, being admired for her originality, voice, physical beauty and charisma. Electrecord
Electrecord is a Romanian record label which was founded in 1932. It was subsequently transformed into the national recording company following the socialist doctrine of centralization and was the only record label in Communist Romania. History Communist times To avoid disc importing from Western Europe and the U.S., Electrecord was often demanded to release copies of some of the discs released abroad (just as recording companies in U.S.S.R. were doing themselves). Even today it is the subject of many anecdotes complaining about the bad quality of Romanian discs; a comparison between an import and a local copy would be the most eloquent proof. Electrecord had to balance the government's demands with those of listeners and musicians.
