Matvey Dmitriev-Mamonov
Count Matvey Alexandrovich Dmitriev-Mamonov (russian: Матвей Александрович Дмитриев-Мамонов; in Moscow – at Vassilyevskoye manor, today within the city borders of Moscow) - was a Russian figure of public life and writer, organiser and chief of the Mamonov regiment during the Napoleonic wars, major general (1813), and founder of the pre- Decembrist Russian Order of Chivalry. He held a considerable estate, including the manor Dubrovitsy near Moscow. In 1825 he refused the oath to Tsar Nicholas I and was declared insane. For the rest of his life he stood under trusteeship at Vassilyevskoye manor, which became known as Mamonov's Dacha. Biography Youth. Literary production His father was Count A.M. Count Alexander Matveyevich Dmitriev-Mamonov (russian: Александр Матвеевич Дмитриев-Мамонов; 30 September 1758 – 11 October 1803, buried in Donskoy Monastery) was a lover of Catherine II of Russia from 1786 to 1789. Biography A scion of the Rurikid family descending from the princes of Smolensk, Mamonov was a protégé of Prince Potemkin, whose aide-de-camp he was appointed in 1784. Alexander did possibly have a twin brother, who, however, died shortly after birth due to mishandling in pregnancy. Two years later, Potemkin introduced the young man to the empress, hoping that he would "care for" the sovereign during his frequent absences from the capital. Catherine was charmed by Mamonov's good looks and manners and lavished expensive gifts on him, his relatives and friends. Emmanuil Aleksandrovich Dmitriev-Mamonov (Russian: Эммануи́л Алекса́ндрович Дми́триев-Мамо́нов; 19 January 1824 in Moscow – 30 December 1883 in Saint Petersburg) was a Russian portrait painter and graphic artist. He also worked as a book designer and caricaturist and was a respected art historian who supported the Slavophile movement. Biography His father, Alexander Ivanovich Dmitriev-Mamonov, Alexander, was an army officer and battle painter who, in 1820, was one of the founders of the Imperial Society for the Encouragement of the Arts. In 1840, he entered the law faculty at Moscow University, alternating classes there with studies at the Imperial Academy of Arts.
