Djanka Tassey Condé
Djanka Tassey Condé (d. 1997) was a ''jeli nagara'', or "chief of the bards", from Guinea. He lived in Fadama, a small village near the river Niandan, in the Dosso Region. His father, Babu Condé (d. 1964), and his brother taught him the art of storytelling, and he inherited his father's position. His oral performance of Epic of Sundiata in 1994 was recorded on cassette by American scholar David C. Conrad, and forms the basis of a published version of the epic. Griot
A griot (; ; Manding languages, Manding: or (in N'Ko script, N'Ko: , or in French spelling); also spelt Djali; or / ; ) is a West African historian, storyteller, praise singer, poet, and/or musician. Griots are masters of communicating stories and history orally, which is an African tradition. Dosso Region
Dosso is one of the seven regions of Niger. The region has an area of , with a population of 2,754,500 as of 2020. History The region of Dosso is the historic centre of the Dosso Kingdom, which had its capital at Dosso. Today the palace of the Sultanate of Dosso remains as a symbol of the aristocratic ruling class of the kingdom. The region was traditionally populated by Zarma people who are believed to have migrated from the Lake Débo area of what is now Mali during the time of the Songhai Empire. Geography Dosso borders Tahoua Region to the northeast, Nigeria to the southeast (specifically Sokoto State and Kebbi State), Benin ( Alibori Department) to the southwest, and Tillabéri Region to the northwest. Epic Of Sundiata
''Sunjata'' (; Manding languages: ''Sònjàdà'', also referred to as ''Sundiata'' or ''Son-Jara''; ; ) is an epic poem of the Malinke people that tells the story of the hero Sundiata Keita (died 1255), the founder of the Mali Empire. The epic is an instance of oral tradition, going back to the 13th century and narrated by generations of ''jelis'' (griots). There is no single or authoritative version. Material pertaining to the epic first began to be collected during the early 20th century in French Sudan, notably by the French elite school École William Ponty, resulting in the "modern" version of the tale as considered standard today, based on the oral account by Djeli Mamoudou Kouyate, a ''jeli'' or traditional oral historian, translated into French by Djibril Tamsir Niane in 1960.
