Discovery (Mike Oldfield Album)
''Discovery'' is the ninth studio album by English multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Mike Oldfield, released on 25 June 1984 on Virgin Records. It comprises a number of pop songs, most notably the single " To France", as well as the instrumental "The Lake". Background and recording After his 1983 tour, Oldfield relocated to Villars-sur-Ollon, Switzerland for tax purposes and started work on a new album. The album was recorded from January to June 1984. Sessions typically ran from 10:30 a.m. to around 7 p.m. each day. While living in Villars, Oldfield also composed the soundtrack to ''The Killing Fields'' (1984). Selections from the two were released as '' The 1984 Suite'', in 2016. The album contains a number of pop songs, which Oldfield had been encouraged by Virgin Records to write, following the success of " Moonlight Shadow" from his previous album, '' Crises''. Mike Oldfield
Michael Gordon Oldfield (born 15 May 1953) is an English retired musician, songwriter and producer best known for his debut studio album ''Tubular Bells'' (1973), which became an unexpected critical and commercial success. Though primarily a guitarist, Oldfield played a range of instruments, which included keyboards and percussion, as well as vocals. He had adopted a range of musical styles throughout his career, including progressive rock, World music, world, Folk music, folk, Classical music, classical, Electronic music, electronic, Ambient music, ambient and new age music. Oldfield took up the guitar at age ten and left school in his teens to embark on a music career. "Moonlight Shadow" is a song written and performed by English multi-instrumentalist Mike Oldfield, released as a single in May 1983 by Virgin Records, and included on his eighth album, ''Crises'', of the same year. The vocals were performed by Scottish vocalist Maggie Reilly, who had collaborated with Mike Oldfield since 1980. It is Oldfield's most successful single, reaching number one on numerous charts around Europe. In the UK, it reached number four during a nineteen-week chart run and was subsequently listed by the Official Charts Company as the 29th best-selling single of 1983. The European Top 100 Albums chart was the European adaptation of the ''Billboard'' 200 albums chart. It ran from March 1984 until December 2010. Also commonly referred to as Eurochart Top 100 Albums, the chart showcased the sales of an act in 19 European countries based on IFPI data. It was compiled by ''Music & Media''. ''Billboard'' became ''Music & Media's'' financial partner in 1985 and later owned the magazine. When ''Music & Media'' closed in August 2003, ''Billboard'' continued to compile the European Top 100 Albums. The European Top 100 combined album sales (both retail and digital) of new and older albums. The methodology was different from the US ''Billboard'' 200, where albums would only be allowed to chart if they weren't 18 months old. Barry Palmer (British Singer)
Barry Palmer (born 1958) is an English singer. He was a replacement for singer Helmut Köllen in the German band Triumvirat in 1976, and appeared on the albums '' Old Loves Die Hard'' and ''Pompeii'' in 1977, Also contributed to the album "À La Carte" in 1978. Maggie Reilly (born 15 September 1956) is a Scottish singer best known for her collaborations with the composer and instrumentalist Mike Oldfield. Most notably, she performed lead vocals on the Oldfield songs " Family Man", " Moonlight Shadow", " To France", and " Foreign Affair", all of which were international hits in the early 1980s. Career Reilly first came to prominence as a member of the 1970s soul outfit Cado Belle (previously named Joe Cool) and released one album with them in 1976.
