Director General Of RTÉ
The director general is the chief executive and editor-in-chief of public service broadcaster Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ). The current director general is Kevin Bakhurst, who replaced Dee Forbes in the role in 2023. Appointment and role The RTÉ Board appoints the director general of RTÉ, who fulfils the roles of both chief executive officer and of editor-in-chief Kevin Bakhurst disbanded the executive on 10 July 2023 in the wake of the RTÉ secret payment scandal, which comprised the company's top management. It was replaced by an interim leadership team. The director general both reports to the board and sits on it "in an ''ex officio'' capacity". Kevin Bakhurst
Kevin Bakhurst (born December 1965) is an English journalist and media executive who has been the Director General of RTÉ, the Irish national broadcaster, since July 2023. He previously served as the managing director of news and current affairs and deputy Director General at RTÉ from 2012 to 2016, and before that as group director of content and media policy at the UK regulator Ofcom. Career Bakhurst attended Haberdashers' Aske's School in Elstree and then St John's College, Cambridge where he read French and German. After a brief spell of working at Price Waterhouse, he joined the BBC in 1989, first as a researcher and then as an assistant producer at the BBC Business and Economics Unit. In 1990 he was promoted to producer of the ''BBC Nine O'Clock News'', where he remained until he moved to Brussels in 1994 to gain further experience for BBC News. RTÉ Board
The RTÉ Board is a body of up to twelve people which makes policy and guiding corporate direction for RTÉ, Ireland's state public broadcaster. The board membership includes the broadcaster's chief officer and one elected staff representative. History The Board was established as the Radio Éireann Authority under the Broadcasting Authority Act 1960. It later became the RTÉ Authority. The Authority was actually the legal entity known as ''Raidio Teilifís Éireann'' and the body which had legal responsibility to run the services authorised under the Broadcasting Authority Acts 1960–2002 but actual management of the services was delegated to the Director General and the staff of the Authority, and all these together comprised RTÉ. RTÉ Executive Board
The RTÉ Executive Board, despite its name, was not a board of directors, but rather was a committee composed of the senior management of the Irish public service broadcaster, Raidió Teilifís Éireann, responsible for the day-to-day running of the broadcaster. The executive board reported to the RTÉ Board through the director general. It was disbanded by the newly appointed Director General Kevin Bakhurst on his first day following the RTÉ secret payment scandal, and replaced by a "temporary interim leadership team". Dee Forbes
Deirdre Anne Forbes (born 1 February 1967) is an Irish former broadcasting executive, who was the Director General of RTÉ from April 2016 to June 2023. She was the first woman to hold the role, and the first external appointment in almost 50 years. Prior to joining RTÉ, she was President and Managing Director of Discovery Networks Northern Europe. In June 2023, it emerged that RTÉ paid broadcaster Ryan Tubridy €345,000 more than publicly declared between 2017 and 2022, and incurred additional costs related to that. Forbes was suspended from her employment a day prior to the public emergence of the controversy and later issued a statement defending her record; she ultimately resigned with immediate effect on 26 June. RTÉ Secret Payment Scandal
The RTÉ secret payment scandal relates to events from late June 2023 onwards when Ireland's main Public broadcasting, public service broadcaster RTÉ first disclosed previously unknown arrangements concerning a leading presenter's pay, and in subsequent discussions, revelations about corporate entertainment for advertising clients, management numbers and high pay, and executive exit packages. On 22 June 2023, RTÉ announced that between 2017 and 2022 it had paid €345,000 more than had been previously disclosed to the TV and radio presenter Ryan Tubridy, whose pay was already known to be more than that of anyone else at RTÉ. The celebrity talent agent Noel Kelly of NK Management negotiated the pay supplements and played a central role in funnelling them to Tubridy. Ryan Tubridy (born 28 May 1973) is an Irish broadcaster. He currently presents the weekday mid-morning programme ''The Ryan Tubridy Show'' on Virgin Radio UK, as well as a weekend programme on Sundays. His broadcasting career with RTÉ spanned over two decades, where he presented many shows on radio and television, most notably ''The Late Late Show (Irish talk show), The Late Late Show'' on RTÉ One from 2009 to 2023.
