Digital Security Act, 2018
The Digital Security Act, 2018, was a digital security law in Bangladesh. This act was passed with the aim of preventing the spread of racism, sectarianism, extremism, terrorist propaganda, and hatred against religious or ethnic minorities through social media, print media or any other electronic media. Any content over the Internet or any other media that was deemed pornographic or otherwise inappropriate by the government could be punished by fines or prison terms of various lengths. ''The Diplomat'' expressed feared that the law could be used to suppress dissenters against the government, due to some of its provisions that are vague and ambiguous, open to interpretation or prone to abuse. The Jatiya Sangsad (), often simply referred to as Sangsad and also known as is the unicameral Legislature, legislative body of Bangladesh. The current parliament of Bangladesh contains 350 seats, including 50 seats reserved exclusively for women. Xulhaz Mannan
Xulhaz Mannan (, ; 12 October 1976 – 25 April 2016) was an employee of United States Agency for International Development, USAID at the United States embassy in Dhaka and the founder of LGBT history in Bangladesh, Bangladesh's first and only LGBT-themed magazine, ''Roopbaan'' (). He was killed in his apartment along with another LGBT activist Mahbub Rabbi Tonoy in a machete attack by Islamist extremists. Syed Mahmud Hossain
Syed Mahmud Hossain (born 31 December 1954) was a Bangladeshi lawyer and judge who served as the 22nd Chief Justice of Bangladesh. He retired from the post of Chief Justice on 30 December 2021. Early life and education Hossain was born in 1954 to Syed Mustafa Ali (d. 2018) and Begum Kawsar Jahan. His father Late Syed Mustafa Ali was a prominent lawyer in Comilla town. Hossain completed secondary school certificate from Comilla Zilla School, Higher Secondary from Comilla Victoria College and B.Sc from the same college under University of Chittagong in 1972, 1974 and 1976 respectively. The Information and Communication Technology Act, 2006 is an act passed by the Parliament of Bangladesh in 2006 to promote and regulate ICT services in the country. Cybercrimes in Bangladesh are adjudicated by cyber tribunals established under this Act. The act was further revised through an amendment in 2013. However, the law became controversial due to certain provisions that were seen as threats to freedom of speech. Tanvir Hasan Choto Monir (born 27 May 1978) is a Bangladesh Awami League politician and a former Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Tangail-2 constituency. He was the joint secretary of Awami League's branch in Germany. Career Monir entered student politics as a member of the Chhatra League in the early 1990s. Mushtaq Ahmed (; 5 December 1967 – 25 February 2021), popularly known as ''Kumir Bhai'', was a Bangladeshi dissident, writer, and entrepreneur. His pen name was Michael Kumir Thakur. He founded the first ever commercial Crocodile breeding farm in Bangladesh. His book ''Kumir Chashir Diary'' was published in 2018. He was working on another book. He was accused with 10 others of sharing cartoons in social media posts criticizing the Bangladeshi government's corrupt and mismanaged response to COVID-19 pandemic and was detained in pre-trial for almost a year. On 25 February 2021 he died in jail, after being denied bail 6 times. He was the first "martyr" of the notorious 2018 Digital Security Act.
