Dietmar Salamon
Dietmar Arno Salamon (born 7 March 1953 in Bremen) is a German mathematician. Education and career Salamon studied mathematics at the Leibniz University Hannover. In 1982 he earned his doctorate at the University of Bremen with dissertation ''On control and observation of neutral systems''. He subsequently spent two years as a postdoctoral fellow at the Mathematical Research Center at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, followed by one year at the Mathematical Research Institute at ETH Zurich. In 1986 he became a lecturer at the University of Warwick, where he was appointed full professor in 1994. The summer semester 1988 he spent as a visiting professor at the University of Bremen and the winter semester 1991 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. From 1998 to 2018 he was a full professor of mathematics at ETH Zurich, retiring as professor emeritus in 2018. Geometric Invariant Theory
In mathematics, geometric invariant theory (or GIT) is a method for constructing quotients by group actions in algebraic geometry, used to construct moduli spaces. It was developed by David Mumford in 1965, using ideas from the paper in classical invariant theory. Geometric invariant theory studies an action of a group on an algebraic variety (or scheme) and provides techniques for forming the 'quotient' of by as a scheme with reasonable properties. One motivation was to construct moduli spaces in algebraic geometry as quotients of schemes parametrizing marked objects. In the 1970s and 1980s the theory developed interactions with symplectic geometry and equivariant topology, and was used to construct moduli spaces of objects in differential geometry, such as instantons and monopoles. Eduard Zehnder
Eduard J. Zehnder (10 November 1940 – 22 November 2024) was a Swiss mathematician, considered one of the founders of symplectic topology. Biography Zehnder studied mathematics and physics at ETH Zurich from 1960 to 1965, where he also did his Ph.D. in theoretical physics, defending his thesis on the three-body problem in 1971 under the direction of Res Jost. He was a visiting professor at Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences (invited by Jürgen Moser), visiting member of Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton from 1972 to 1974. He passed his habilitation in mathematics in 1974 at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. He had appointments at the University of Bochum from 1976 to 1986; at the University of Aix-la-Chapelle during the academic year 1987–88, where he was director of the Mathematical Institute. Andreas Floer
Andreas Floer (; 23 August 1956 – 15 May 1991) was a German mathematician who made seminal contributions to symplectic topology, and mathematical physics, in particular the invention of Floer homology. Floer's first pivotal contribution was a solution of a special case of Arnold's conjecture on fixed points of a symplectomorphism. Because of his work on Arnold's conjecture and his development of instanton homology, he achieved wide recognition and was invited as a plenary speaker for the International Congress of Mathematicians held in Kyoto in August 1990.
