Dieppe Park, Montreal
Dieppe Park (french: Parc de Dieppe) is a park in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It is at the eastern tip of Cité du Havre, in the borough of Ville-Marie. Between 1992 and 2017, it was known as Parc de la Cité-du-Havre. In 2017 it was named Dieppe Park to mark the 75th anniversary of the Dieppe Raid. Despite it having an area of just 7 hectares, it is categorized by the city of Montreal as one of its large parks. The park offers an excellent view of the Old Port of Montreal, Downtown Montreal, and the Jacques Cartier Bridge. It also is a viewing point of the Montreal Fireworks Festival. Cité du Havre is a neighbourhood in the borough of Ville-Marie of the city of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It is located on a narrow man-made peninsula, the Mackay Pier (''Jetée Mackay''), which was largely built to protect the Old Port of Montreal from the currents of the Saint Lawrence River and from ice banks and floodings in the springtime. Ville-Marie is the name of a borough (''arrondissement'') in the centre of Montreal, Quebec. The borough is named after Fort Ville-Marie, the French settlement that would later become Montreal (now Old Montreal), which was located within the present-day borough. Dieppe Raid
Operation Jubilee or the Dieppe Raid (19 August 1942) was an Allied amphibious attack on the German-occupied port of Dieppe in northern France, during the Second World War. Over 6,050 infantry, predominantly Canadian, supported by a regiment of tanks, were put ashore from a naval force operating under protection of Royal Air Force (RAF) fighters. The port was to be captured and held for a short period, to test the feasibility of a landing and to gather intelligence. German coastal defences, port structures and important buildings were to be demolished. The raid was intended to boost Allied morale, demonstrate the commitment of the United Kingdom to re-open the Western Front and support the Soviet Union, fighting on the Eastern Front. The Old Port of Montreal (french: Vieux-Port de Montréal, italic=no) is the historic port of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The Jacques Cartier Bridge (french: pont Jacques-Cartier) is a steel truss cantilever bridge crossing the Saint Lawrence River from Montreal Island, Montreal, Quebec, to the south shore at Longueuil, Quebec, Canada. The bridge crosses Saint Helen's Island in the centre of the river, where offramps allow access to the Parc Jean-Drapeau and La Ronde amusement park.
