''The Street'' () is a 1923 German silent film, silent drama film directed by Karl Grune and starring Anton Edthofer, Aud Egede-Nissen, and Leonhard Haskel. The film's sets were designed by the art director Karl Görge. Cast Synopsis This was the first of the German "street" films. Prints of the film do exist, distributed by Transit Film GmbH for commercial screenings, . transitfilm.de despite claims to the contrary. There are few intertitles throughout the film, adding to the predominantly visual story-telling approach. It tells the story of one night in which a middle-aged man is lured away from his happy home into the thrills and dangers of the city streets. Karl Grune
Karl Grune (22 January 1890 – 2 October 1962) was an Austrian film director and writer who made many silent films in the 1920s. Grune was born into a Jewish family Siegbert Salomon Prawer, ''Between Two Worlds: The Jewish Presence in German and Austrian Film, 1910-1933'', Berghahn Books (2007), p. 211 in Vienna, where he later attended drama school. He volunteered in the First World War, where an injury temporarily deprived him of the ability to speak in 1918. After the war he made his directing debut in 1919 with ''Menschen in Ketten'' ("People in Chains"). In 1923 he made ''Schlagende Wetter'' with Liane Haid and Eugen Klöpfer in the leading roles. The film is a notable early example of naturalism in film making, at a time when expressionism was the norm. Also that year he made '' Die Straße'' ("The Street"), which is considered Grune's most notable film.
