The Department of the Interior was an Australian government department that existed between April 1939 and December 1972. It was the second so-named Australian government department. Scope Information about the department's functions and government funding allocation could be found in the Machinery of government#Australian Government Administrative Arrangement Orders, Administrative Arrangements Orders, the annual Portfolio Budget Statements and in the department's annual reports. The department was diverse and dealt with a broad range of activities. Joseph Carrodus
Joseph Aloysius Carrodus (3 September 1885 – 8 April 1961) was a senior Australian public servant. Early life and career Joseph Carrodus was born on 3 September 1885 in Richmond, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. He studied at St. Patrick's College in East Melbourne and then the University of Melbourne. Carrodus joined the Department of External Affairs as a junior in 1904, not long after leaving school. During World War I, he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in February 1916, departing from Melbourne on the ship HMAT A34 Persic in June 1916 to fight in France as an infantry captain. He returned to Australia on 27 May 1919, joining the Department of Home and Territories as a clerk. On 14 March 1923, Carrodus married Mabel Florence Maud, and the pair settled in Canberra in 1927. William Alexander McLaren (8 May 189830 September 1973) was a senior Australian public servant. He was Secretary of the Department of the Interior between 1949 and 1963. Richard Kingsland
Sir Richard Kingsland, (19 October 1916 – 27 August 2012) was an Australian RAAF pilot known for being the youngest Australian group captain at age 29. He later became a senior public servant, heading the Departments of the Interior, Repatriation, and Veterans' Affairs. Biography Julius Allan Cohen was born in 1916. He later changed his name to Richard Kingsland, to avoid anti-semitism. Kingsland flew a Short Sunderland to Morocco in 1940 with two of Britain's senior WWII leaders, Duff Cooper and John Vereker, 6th Viscount Gort, who were attempting to make a diplomatic agreement with French leaders in North Africa. When negotiations failed, Kingsland evacuated the VIPs with pistol drawn. He then managed a difficult take off from a river estuary, while being harassed by a French police boat. George Warwick Smith
George Henry Warwick Smith (3 October 1916 – 27 December 1999) was a senior Australian public servant. Early life Warwick Smith was born in Charters Towers, Queensland on 3 November 1916. He attended high school at Brisbane Grammar School, but left early at the age of 15. He went on to matriculate and graduate with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Queensland. Career Warwick Smith moved from a job at the Queensland Education Department to the Commonwealth Public Service in the Department of Commerce. He soon left the public service to join the Army, serving during the Second World War between 1941 and 1945.
