The Department of Housing was an Australian government department with responsibility for housing, including the administration of housing schemes and grants that existed between December 1963 and November 1973. The Department of National Development was an Government of Australia, Australian government department that existed between March 1950 and December 1972, and between December 1977 and December 1979. History The Department of National Development was established in March 1950, with Richard Casey, Baron Casey as its Minister. Media reported that the new Department would plan for the supply of basic commodities, promote decentralisation and regional development and plan for the development of primary and manufacturing industries and the stimulation of housing construction. Leslie Harry Ernest Bury CMG (25 February 1913 – 7 September 1986) was an Australian politician and economist. He was a member of the Liberal Party and served in the House of Representatives between 1956 and 1974, representing the Division of Wentworth. Dame Annabelle Jane Mary Rankin (28 July 190830 August 1986) was an Australian politician and diplomat. She was the first woman from Queensland elected to parliament, the first woman federal departmental minister, and the first Australian woman to be appointed head of a foreign mission. Rankin was born in Brisbane, the daughter of state MP Colin Rankin. A member of the Liberal Party of Australia, Liberal Party, she was elected to the Australian Senate, Senate at the 1946 Australian federal election, 1946 federal election, taking her seat the following year. Edward Gough Whitlam (11 July 191621 October 2014) was the 21st prime minister of Australia, serving from December 1972 to November 1975. To date the longest-serving federal leader of the Australian Labor Party (ALP), he was notable for being the head of a reformist and socially progressive government that ended with his controversial dismissal by the then- governor-general of Australia, Sir John Kerr, at the climax of the 1975 constitutional crisis. Leslie Royston Johnson AM (22 November 1924 – 26 May 2015) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and held ministerial office in the Whitlam government, serving as Minister for Housing (1972–1973), Works (1973), Housing and Construction (1973–1975), and Aboriginal Affairs (1975). He represented the Division of Hughes in New South Wales from 1955 to 1966 and from 1969 to 1983. James Nimmo
James Ferguson Nimmo (191215 December 1984) was a senior Australian public servant and policy maker, best known for his time as Secretary of the Department of Housing. Life and career James Nimmo was born in 1912. He attended Geelong College and then the University of Melbourne. Whilst in his final year of university (studying economics), he worked for Lyndhurst Giblin as a research secretary. Moving to Canberra in 1935 to take up a temporary appointment at the Bureau of Census and Statistics. He was awarded a permanent position in 1938, after a short period of study at the London School of Economics.
