The Department of Primary Industry was an Australian government department that existed between December 1975 and July 1987. It was the second so-named Australian government department. Ian Sinclair
Ian McCahon Sinclair (born 10 June 1929) is an Australian former politician who served as a Member of Parliament for 35 years, and was leader of the National Party from 1984 to 1989. He served as either a minister or opposition frontbencher for all but a few months from 1965 to 1989, and later Speaker of the House of Representatives from March to August 1998. Sinclair was born in Sydney and studied law at the University of Sydney. He later bought a farming property near Tamworth. Peter Nixon
Peter James Nixon (22 March 1928 – 1 May 2025) was an Australian politician and businessman. He served in the House of Representatives from 1961 to 1983, representing the Division of Gippsland as a member of the National Country Party (NCP). He held ministerial office as Minister for the Interior (1967–1971), Shipping and Transport (1971–1972), Postmaster-General (1975), Transport (1975–1979), and Primary Industry (1979–1983). John Kerin
John Charles Kerin (21 November 1937 – 29 March 2023) was an Australian economist and Labor Party politician who served in the House of Representatives from 1972 to 1975 and again from 1978 to 1993. Walter Ives
Walter Ives (26 August 191720 December 2006) was a senior Australian public servant. He was head of the Department of Primary Industry from 1968 to 1978. Life and career Walter Ives was born on 26 August 1917. Ives worked in the CSIRO, and was appointed to the Department of Primary Industry in 1969 from his position there. As the Department of Primary Industry transitioned to become the Department of Agriculture, and then the Department of Primary Industry again, Ives remained its head. In May 1978, Ives was named as the first chairman of the Primary Industry Bank of Australia, and he left the Department of Primary Industry. Ives died on 20 December 2006, aged 89.
