Etymology The name comes from Greek (riza), meaning "mountain slopes". The Georgian, Laz, and Armenian names also have Greek origins: their names in respective order are ''Rize'' (რიზე), ''Rizini'' (რიზინი), and ''Rize'' (Ռիզե).
