Defence Select Committee
The Defence Select Committee is one of the Select Committees of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, having been established in 1979. It examines the expenditure, administration, and policy of the Ministry of Defence and its associated public bodies, including the British Armed Forces. The Committee's remit does not generally review Defence Intelligence which instead falls under the Intelligence and Security Committee of Parliament. In British politics, parliamentary select committees are cross-party groups of MPs or Lords which investigate specific issues or scrutinise the work of the Government of the United Kingdom. They can be appointed from the House of Commons, from the House of Lords, or as a joint committee of Parliament drawn from both. Committees may be constituted as "sessional" committees – i.e. be near-permanent – or as "ad-hoc" committees with a specific deadline by which to complete their work, after which they cease to exist. House of Commons select committees are generally responsible for overseeing the work of government departments and agencies, whereas Lords select committees look at general issues, such as the constitution or the economy. Derek Twigg
John Derek Twigg (born 9 July 1959) is a British Labour Party politician who currently serves as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Widnes and Halewood since 2024, and for its predecessor constituency, Halton, from the 1997 general election until its abolition in 2024. Early life Twigg was born in Widnes, Lancashire and attended Bankfield High School in Widnes, and afterwards Halton College of Further Education (now Riverside College). At the age of 16, he joined the Civil Service and worked for the Department for Employment (at Runcorn) for the following 19 years. At 18, Twigg became branch secretary of the Civil and Public Services Association (now part of the Public and Commercial Services Union) before joining the Labour Party in 1979. Frederick Jacob Theseus Thomas (born ) is a British Labour Party politician and former Royal Marines officer. He has been Member of Parliament (MP) for Plymouth Moor View since 2024, defeating veterans minister Johnny Mercer. Early life and education Thomas was born to a civil servant and a teacher, and has four siblings. He is a grandson of historian Charles Thomas and writer Jessica Mann on his father's side, and a grandson of Christopher Brett, 5th Viscount Esher, on his mother's side. He was educated at Winchester College and studied politics, religion and ethics at King's College London. He learned to read and write in Arabic and studied abroad in Egypt shortly after the Arab Spring. Ian Roome
Ian Roome () is a British Liberal Democrat politician who was elected as the Member of Parliament for North Devon in the 2024 United Kingdom general election. He previously served for two terms as Mayor of Barnstaple. Early life and career Roome was born and raised in Sheffield, attending Chaucer Comprehensive School from 1979 to 1985. After leaving school, Roome joined the Royal Air Force in 1986, serving across the United Kingdom, as well as in Germany at RAF Laarbruch. He first came to North Devon in 1989, after being posted to RAF Chivenor. Alexander Jesse Norman (born 23 June 1962) is a British politician who has served as Shadow Leader of the House of Commons since November 2024. A member of the Conservative Party, he has been a Member of Parliament (MP) for Hereford and South Herefordshire since 2010. He was elected as a fellow of the Royal Historical Society in 2020.
