De Soto, Missouri
De Soto is a city in Jefferson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 6,449 at the 2020 census and the city is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The Van Metre family were first to settle in 1803. The town was organized in 1857 and is named for the explorer Hernando De Soto, who claimed the Louisiana Territory for Spain. De Soto was the city closest to the mean center of U.S. population in 1980. The city celebrated its Bicentennial in 2003. The city made national news on and after May 6, 2003, when straight-line winds and a tornado struck. History De Soto was platted in 1857 and named after Hernando de Soto (c. 1496/1497–1542), Spanish conquistador. A post office has been in operation at De Soto since 1858. US Route 67
U.S. Route 67 is a major north–south U.S. highway which extends for 1,560 miles (2,511 km) in the Central United States. The southern terminus of the route is at the United States-Mexico border in Presidio, Texas, where it continues south as Mexican Federal Highway 16 upon crossing the Rio Grande. The northern terminus is at U.S. Route 52 in Sabula, Iowa. US 67 crosses the Mississippi River twice along its routing. The first crossing is at West Alton, Missouri, where US 67 uses the Clark Bridge to reach Alton, Illinois. Missouri Route 110 (Jefferson County)
Route 110 is a short highway in Jefferson County. Its eastern terminus is at U.S. Route 67 about six miles (10 km) east of De Soto; its western terminus is at Route 21 a few miles north of De Soto. De Soto and Olympian Village are the only cities on the route. Route description Route 110 begins at an intersection with Route 21 north of De Soto, heading southeast on a two-lane undivided road. The route passes through wooded areas with some fields and homes, crossing over Union Pacific's De Soto Subdivision and coming to an intersection with Route P. The road leaves the De Soto area and heads east through more rural areas with some development. Missouri Route 21
Route 21 is a highway in eastern Missouri. Its northern terminus is at Route 30 in Affton. Its southern terminus is at the Arkansas-Missouri state line (where it continues as Highway 115). In the St. Louis area, it is known as Tesson Ferry Road, which was named after the 19th century proprietor of the ferry across the Meramec River. Route 21 from the Meramec River to Route B, along with Route M, make up the Jefferson County Scenic Byway. Improvements The section through northern Jefferson County, Missouri was considered dangerous. As a result, the road was rerouted and built to freeway standards. Construction to reroute the highway to just south of Hillsboro was completed on December 15, 2008 and Route 21 is currently freeway standard from Route 141 to Highway B. Joachim Creek
Joachim Creek is a stream in Jefferson and St. Francois counties in the U.S. state of Missouri. It is a tributary to the Mississippi River. The stream headwaters arise in northern St. Francois County southeast of Halifax and it flows north roughly parallel to and east of US Route 67. The stream enters Jefferson County and just northeast of Valles Mines the stream turns to the northwest and passes under Route 67. The stream turns north and passes through De Soto and continues northeast past Victoria and Hematite. West of Festus the stream meanders north and northwest past Silica and Ludwigs. From May 3 to May 11, 2003, a prolonged and destructive tornado outbreak sequence, series of tornado outbreaks affected much of the Great Plains and Eastern United States. Most of the severe activity was concentrated between May 4 and May 10, which saw more tornadoes than any other week-long span in recorded history; 335 tornadoes occurred during this period, concentrated in the Ozarks and central Mississippi River Valley. Central School Campus, also known as Central School and DeSoto High School, is a historic school complex located at De Soto, Jefferson County, Missouri. The Central School was built about 1882, and remodeled into its current form in 1950. It is a 2 1/2- to 3-story rectangular brick building. The DeSoto High School was built in 1927, and is a three-story, textured brick building with a flat roof and accented with limestone or cast stone ornament reflecting the Classical Revival style.
